Ask The Slot Expert

9 August 2002

Dear John,

Always read your pieces at RGT and want to say thanks for all the great info, and ask about something I have never seen covered anywhere.

I like to play Let it Ride on the 25 and 50 cent machines. Do you know if these machines are dealt randomly from a deck of 52 or are they "Fixed?" Could be my imagination, but they just don't seem right!

Thanks,
SNID

Dear SNID,

Thanks for the kind words about our site.

The Let It Ride machines deal randomly from a 52-card deck.

It is just your imagination that something is amiss. If you played a large number of hands and kept track of the cards dealt on each hand, you would find that the probability of being dealt each card is about the same.

At one time I was convinced that each time I had a respin of the third reel on a Double Spin Double Diamond machine, the respin gave me the same symbol that I had before the respin. When I actually kept track of the respins, I discovered that I did indeed get a different symbol most of the time. So much for my memory.

Human memory can be selective, especially when gambling results are involved.

Best of luck in and out of the casinos,
John
