Tales told during shuffles

1 August 2013
After nearly 20 years of writing this column -- it launched at the beginning of February in 1994 -- I have a fair idea of what resonates with readers. After all, many of you are kind enough to tell me, via e-mail. One message that comes through loud and clear is that players love to read about other players. ... (read more)

Random strategies

28 July 2013
QUESTION: I teach statistics and probability at a community college, so my brother-in-law was asking me about betting systems. He showed me a book in which the author claimed the way to beat baccarat was by betting streaks. The BIL wanted to know if he could apply that to roulette, maybe starting to bet on ... (read more)

Side bets at blackjack: Are they worth it?

25 July 2013
Side bets at blackjack are offered for two basic reasons: to add a little excitement for players who want more out of the game than trying to grind out a profit one bet at a time, and to increase action to generate more profit for the house. The house edge on side bets tends to be higher than on blackjack itself, provided the player knows basic strategy. ... (read more)

Comps and commissions

21 July 2013
QUESTION: I have a question about comps. My wife and I were on an overnight casino trip, playing mostly penny slots. We lost about $170 between us, but that was well within our budget and we had a good time. We got two buffets comped, for $15 apiece, and our points were worth $25 in free play. A couple of weeks after we got home, we got a mailer from the casino. ... (read more)

New slot machines for slot tournaments

18 July 2013
Slot tournaments have been part of the casino promotions tool kit for decades. My first was at the beginning of the 1990s, the “Magnificent Sevens” event that ran daily at the Las Vegas Sands. From early morning till the finals after 10 each night, slot players plunked down their 10 bucks for a chance to win $1,000 -- something I actually did the first time I played the tournament. ... Enter the Dragon

14 July 2013
QUESTION: I have a question about Ten Poker, and the others where you play more than one hand like Five Play and Triple Play. I really like playing the three hands at once. It’s fun, and when you get winners on the deal and win three times over, the meter goes up fast. My problem is the bet. If I’m on a quarter machine, Ten Play means betting $12.50 a hand. ... A "fishing trip" for John and Marcy

11 July 2013
A couple of weeks ago, I managed to clear my calendar for a few days for a little getaway, so Marcy and I could celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. It was just a short trip to lake country, overlooking the water on weekend that was decidedly not beach weather. The Arctic blast that hit us square in our ... (read more)

Ten Play video poker and face-up two-deck blackjack

7 July 2013
QUESTION: Should I use the same strategy on Ten Play Poker as on video poker games with one hand? I ask because one of my favorites is Double Bonus, and I have one casino where I can get 9-7-5 Double Bonus on a Ten Play dollar machine. I was dealt a full house, three aces and two 7s. On a single-hand game, I’d keep the aces and throw away the 2s, and hope to draw a full house. ... (read more)

Royal flushes and handles on slot machines

30 June 2013
QUESTION: I have a couple of questions about royal flushes. How much do they contribute to the payback percentages you give on video poker games? I rarely get a royal flush, so what can I really expect to get back when I play? While we’re on the subject, how much difference does a progressive jackpot mean ... (read more)
