John Grochowski Gaming Guru - Page 90Doubling on 11 versus dealer Ace and enjoying penny slots23 March 2014
QUESTION: A friend of a friend said he used to just hit 11 when the dealer showed an Ace, and now he doubles down almost all the time. We didn’t have time for a long conversation, but my friend said his friend is a good blackjack player who knows all that basic strategy stuff. So my question is, why the change? Has basic strategy changed? My friend didn’t know, either. ... (read more)
Baccarat, mini-baccarat and midi-baccarat20 March 2014
When I’m at a party or some other gathering that includes people I don’t know, I’m often introduced with, “John writes about gambling.” Most of the time, the response is, “Oh! Tell me how to win.” Then we’ll all laugh and move on. At a January bowl game viewing at a friend’s house, the conversation took a different turn. ... (read more)
Players' clubs and splitting 10s at blackjack16 March 2014
QUESTION: I’m at a loss to explain what’s happening in my players' club, and hoped maybe you could help. My wife and I go to a casino together, maybe two or three times a month. She plays slots the whole time, mainly on pennies. She likes the entertainment, but doesn’t really like to spend much money, so sets a budget for herself. ... (read more)
The new slot bonuses13 March 2014
Today’s slot players are used to bonus events as a normal part of the games. That video slots, and many reel-spinners, will have free spins, pick’em events, mystery jackpots or some combination of the available options is a given. But new forms of bonusing are being developed all the time, and they’re not all integral parts of the game itself. ... (read more)
The stop spin slots9 March 2014
QUESTION: On slot machines that have a "stop spin" button does it make a difference or will you get what you would have gotten if it completed its spin on its own? ANSWER: It makes no difference. The reels are going to show what the random number generator tells them to, regardless of whether you stop them. ... (read more)
Winning a big one at video poker6 March 2014
I’ve been playing video poker for a very long time, and only once have I had a royal flush dealt to me in the first five cards. When it happened, I was alternating play with my dad, and we split the royal, $500 for him, $500 for me. On multihand machines, I’ve never had a dealt royal, although I did once draw two on a Triple Play game. ... (read more)
Blackjack tipping and 4% baccarat bank bet2 March 2014
QUESTION: I usually bet $10 or $15 a hand in blackjack, and I’ve gotten into a pattern when it comes to tipping the dealer. Unless I’m on a bad losing streak, I tip after every blackjack. If I’m betting $10, I usually just add a $1 bet for the dealer on the next hand. If I’m betting $15, though, I take the $2.50 chip that comes with my winnings and make it the dealer bet. ... Must a player point out dealer mistakes?27 February 2014
I received an e-mail in early January from a blackjack player who was having a crisis of conscience. “There’s a dealer at my regular hangout who tips his hole card,” the player wrote. “He doesn’t do it on every hand, but he does often enough to make a real difference. You can’t see it at the middle of the table, but if I sit at third base, I get a pretty good look. ... (read more)
Slot payouts are changing23 February 2014

Slot machines where skill counts20 February 2014
Nearly all slot machines are designed to be as close to pure games of chance as programmers can get. You have no control over where the reels are going to stop, and neither does the casino operator. A random number generator determines the outcome, and the odds are the same on every spin. A tiny percentage of slots incorporate elements of skill. ... (read more)
