Craps and video poker conundrums

10 September 2015
A couple of messages popped into my e-mail box in early August, both on the theme of “what you’re telling me just can’t be true.” I get these every now and then from players who want to argue odds and strategies. This time, one came from a craps player who wanted to argue in favor of placing 6 and 8 instead ... (read more)

Winning and losing and dealer hits

6 September 2015
QUESTION: When you rate slot games, does winning or losing factor into what you write? ANSWER: I’m human, so of course it does. I know full well that all machines pay big sometimes and hardly at all on others, but if I encounter one that yields its bonuses early and often, leaving a warm glow in my wallet, I’m more likely to remember it fondly when it comes slot-writing time. ... Better blackjack

3 September 2015
It has seemed to me over the years that players have been getting better at blackjack strategy. This is strictly anecdotal in time spent at today’s common multideck games where the dealer hits soft 17, but I don’t see players stand on soft 17 anywhere near as often as I once did. Most of the players I ... (read more)

Flush penalty cards and trend betting

30 August 2015
QUESTION: In a recent column, you talked about a flush penalty card. What is that? ANSWER: In video poker, a flush penalty card is one in your initial hand that is the same suit as other cards you are considering holding and would decrease your chances of drawing a flush if you discarded it. For example, ... (read more)

Slot machine love

27 August 2015
Some of my favorite slot machines in the video era were the tests of knowledge and skill Mikohn Gaming rolled out in the early 2000s. They weren’t for everyone, but those who liked them REALLY liked them. There was Battleship, where you could use a strategy to zero in on ships in the bonus event; Ripley’s ... (read more)

Pro video poker and great luck

23 August 2015
QUESTION: I agree with most of what you wrote [in an advising a player who was drawing royal flushes about once per 30 days against playing video poker professionally], but disagree that pros play only games with positive EV such as full-pay Deuces Wild and 10-7-5 Double Bonus Poker. I started out as a ... (read more)

I'm here to gamble

20 August 2015
Basic strategy helps take as much of the gamble out of blackjack as possible. It’s based on the mathematical probabilities for each possible hand against each dealer face-up card. The best strategies don’t guarantee winners, but they do reduce the house edge and take a little risk out of gambling. ... (read more)

Why Jacks or Better?

16 August 2015
QUESTION: It kind irritates me that you and other writers usually use Jacks or Better for examples in your articles to demonstrate a point about video poker strategy. As you are well aware, the most popular video poker game is Double Double Bonus. So why not use the most popular version of video poker? Yes, this is my game of choice, and one that I have been playing since 1998. ... (read more)

There's something about Carla

13 August 2015
Carla is a regular reader of this column who likes to tell her stories. A couple of years ago, she told of a nice run with a betting progression at blackjack in which her $100 buy-in became $1,800. Her most recent e-mail came when I was collecting stories about alternatives for time away from their main games. ... (read more)

The odds are the same

9 August 2015
QUESTION: I have been playing slots for the past four years and I have noticed that virtually all of my big wins of $500 or more happen within the first few spins. I have not been able to “force” a machine to win by playing long periods at the same machine. Given this, I am now of the opinion that if you ... (read more)
