Every year, hundreds of new games are introduced on slot machines. That’s all in keeping up with player demand for new, exciting ways to play. Peak popularity for any game lasts only a few months, and new games have to be continually cycled onto the floor. During the three days of Global Gaming Expo this ... (read more)

Taxes and the RNG

15 November 2015
QUESTION: I've never seen you mention that you have to pay taxes on any royal flush over $1,200. If you do file a long (federal tax) form, you have to get a printout where you have gambled and deduct your winnings from your loses. When you go on a cruise with a foreign line, you don't have to sign a tax form, because they are not registered in the U.S. ... (read more)

Amazing new slots

12 November 2015
One of the goals of slot machine designers is to get you involved in the game, to make the game entertaining so you’ll stay in your seat even when the wins aren’t coming. “Interactivity” has been a buzzword in the industry ever since the dawn of video bonusing slots, and getting you to be an active participant is something the slotmakers strive to achieve. ... Missing card at blackjack

8 November 2015
QUESTION: I was playing at a charity event against the dealer who had a five deck shoe. I won huge. At the end of the night he counted his cards and realized that 11 of the "bust cards" (4, 5 and 6s) were missing from the deck. The total number of cards he had was only 249, by 260. He asked for all of his money back because he said the odds were way in the player's favor. ... (read more)

Gambling games and tips

1 November 2015
QUESTION: I met the slot director at the casino by us, and we were talking about different games. He said one of them was a “gambling game,” and before I could ask him what he meant, he was called away. So I’m asking you: Aren’t they all gambling games? They’ll all take your money. ANSWER: High-volatility ... (read more)

New blackjack games

29 October 2015
Blackjack has been the most popular casino table game for more than 50 years. So naturally, side bets and variations on blackjack are among the first places developers turn in creating new table games. Here are a few I sampled at the Sept. 29-Oct. 1 Global Gaming Expo that are available for casino operators’ ... (read more)

Full-pay Deuces Wild

25 October 2015
QUESTION: I have friends who live in Las Vegas, so when I go, I usually stay with them instead of at a hotel, and we do a lot of non-casino things. When they play, they don’t like to go to the Strip. They do like video poker a lot, and they take me to off-Strip casinos where the locals like to play. ... (read more)

Criss Cross Poker

22 October 2015
Usually, when I see a table game for the first time at the annual Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, I assume it’s going to be some time before I see it again. Table space is limited, it takes time for games to get a trial in casinos, and some games make a splash online before brick-and-mortar operators give them a look. ... (read more)

Royals and insurance

18 October 2015
QUESTION: I’m new to video poker, and everybody tells me Jacks or Better is the easiest game, so that’s what I’m playing for right now. It seems like the goal is to draw a royal flush. That would be $1,000 on the quarter games I play. I could make good use of $1,000! My question is, how much money do you ... (read more)
