Comp composition

25 August 2016
There’s something about comps that brings out the curiosity in casino players. Among the most frequent questions I receiver are “Can you get comps without actually risking any money?” and “Can you work it so you get comps that are worth more than your losses?” I’ve tacked the first question a few times, ... Full houses and flushes

21 August 2016
QUESTION: Your article on different Deuces Wild payoffs reminded me of something I’ve wanted to ask. You say that in non-wild-card games, percentages usually are adjusted by changing the pay tables on full houses and flushes. But there are lots of other changes, especially the fours of a kind. Double Double ... (read more)

Three Card Poker payouts

18 August 2016
At most Three Card Poker tables, the highest payoff on the Pair Plus option is the 40-1 you get on any straight flush. Compared to other poker-based table games, that top payoff is easily attainable. Straight flushes come up an average of once per 460.4 hands. Payoffs are higher in five-card stud-based ... (read more)

Is the Big Wheel a good deal?

14 August 2016
QUESTION: I live in an area where there are eight casinos within about a 45-minute drive. They’re scattered in different directions, so there’s no casino hopping. You pick one and that’s where you go for the day. My husband and I go to them all. Maybe we see each one twice a year. One thing I’ve noticed is ... (read more)

Don't do what this "don't" player did

11 August 2016
Craps is the most social game in the casinos. For the most part, players win and lose together. That’s part of the fun. There’s nothing quite like the elation and camaraderie of a busy craps table with a shooter on the roll. Still, there are those who prefer the so-called dark side, betting the shooter won’t make his points. ... (read more)

Better blackjack players

7 August 2016
QUESTION: You mentioned that casinos are saying players are better and they have a smaller house edge in blackjack than they did years ago. What does that mean to players? Why should I really care about this? ANSWER: The main effect for players is a tightening of comps as casinos see less value in blackjack players. ... (read more)

Automated games

4 August 2016
A few weeks ago I wrote about automated and semi-automated table games, zeroing in on the Shaq Jack blackjack game that recently made its Atlantic City debut. That brought several questions from readers about automated formats in other games, with one specifically mentioning Aruze Gaming’s Shoot to Win Craps. ... (read more)

Banned and mini-baccarat

31 July 2016
QUESTION: I play mostly craps, maybe once a month in casinos in Ohio. I can get to both Cleveland and Columbus pretty easily. I also go to Atlantic City maybe once a year and Las Vegas a little less to indulge in some casino-hopping. A guy I work with likes to talk, and he said he was barred from playing craps by a casino in Nevada. ... (read more)

Scouting the tables

28 July 2016
When I play table games, I don’t start with any scouting mission. I don’t look for tables where players have been winning, nor do I stop to watch a few hands of card games, dice rolls at craps or spins of the roulette wheels. I just look for empty space at the game I want to play at the minimum bet that fits my budget. ... (read more)

Bonus activation

24 July 2016
QUESTION: I read an article about a slot machine that said, “The manufacturer says the side bet also causes the bonus features to occur more frequently.” Now, if the RNG throws out random numbers, which I would assume correspond to the bonus symbols (or whatever type of bonus triggers there may be), how can ...
