New blackjack options

3 November 2016
Blackjack has reigned as the most popular casino table game for more than 50 years. It has a low house edge and even gives skilled players the chance to grab an advantage. Naturally enough, casinos want to take advantage of that popularity while building in a little more profitability. So every year brings new twists on the basic game and new side bets. ... Beatable casino games and comps

30 October 2016
QUESTION: Is blackjack the only common game that can be found in casinos that gives an opportunity for a long-term edge over the casino through strategy? ANSWER: I’ll give a qualified yes to that, with your “common” proviso eliminating the highest-paying video poker games and your “through strategy” requirement eliminating dice control at craps. ... New poker games

27 October 2016
Each year at the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, new table games cluster around two areas. There are new poker-based games, and new blackjack variants. That’s only normal. Blackjack is the most popular casino table game, and the biggest growth in recent times has been in poker-based games such as Three Card Poker and Mississippi Stud. ... (read more)

Roulette streaks

23 October 2016
QUESTION: The sign at a roulette table caught my eye. It said the last two numbers had been 6, the one before that was 5, and before that another 5 and a 4. So in the last five spins, the only numbers that had come up were 4, 5 and 6. It was too tempting to pass up. I bought in and made bets totaling $10: $6 on the 4-5-6 street and $2 each on the 1-2-3 and 7-8-9 streets. ... (read more)

A big part of the fun of the annual Global Gaming Expo at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas is getting to see slot manufacturers’ newest attractions at their best. What might be, might be

16 October 2016
QUESTION: Playing Double Double Bonus Poker, I held 2-2, discarded a king, and the draw brought A-A-A. Boom! Boom! Boom! I was happy with the full house, of course, but it got me wondering what would have happened if I had held the king instead. The way those aces popped up so fast, was the game ready to ... Small bets add up fast

13 October 2016
Slot machines have long been thought of as an inexpensive way to play. A table games player is looking at minimum bets of $5 and up, and at some premium casinos at busy times, it’s tough to find an open spot even at a $25 minimum blackjack table. Slot players can bet one quarter at a time. On a dwindling number of older video slots, they can even play a single payline for one penny at a time. ... (read more)

The power of 20

9 October 2016
QUESTION: I just left a blackjack table where it seemed like nobody could win with a 20. One hand, three of us had 20s and the dealer had a blackjack. Three times within five hands I was dealt 20s. On one, the dealer also had a 20, and on the other two she pulled 21s. Other players were having that kind of luck, too. ... (read more)

That discarded coupon book

6 October 2016
Readers send me A LOT of stories of their casino experiences – tales of their first trips to Las Vegas or Atlantic City, big wins, things that impressed or depressed them and even times when they couldn’t win for losing. I am grateful, and when I share the stories, I hope you find them as much fun to read as I do. ... (read more)

Electronic and 6:5 blackjack

2 October 2016
QUESTION: I saw a blackjack table where there was a dealer and real cards, but the bets were on a screen. Every player had a screen and touched it to make bets. I like the feel of chips myself, but does the screen betting make any real difference in the game? ANSWER: Electronic wagering speeds up the game. ... (read more)
