Two hands versus one in video poker

30 August 2018
QUESTION: I was playing penny video slots next to a lady who was playing two games. She wasn't waiting for anything to stop. She'd hit one button then right away do the other machine. Even during free spins on one, she kept playing the other. I joked that it was all I could do to follow one game, there was no way I could keep track of two. ... (read more)

Flop Poker

26 August 2018
Whenever I'm in a casino for the first time or the first time in a long while, I like to take a long walk around the casino floor to get the lay of the land. Among the things I'm looking for are table games outside the usual mix. One that recently drew me in for a few hands is a poker-based game called Flop Poker. ... (read more)

Complicated craps and blackjack surrender

23 August 2018
QUESTION: When you wrote about Casino Over Under, you mentioned that games needed to be easy to understand and easy to deal with an uncluttered layout. What about craps? It's not any of those things. You can play for years and not understand all of the bets. There are different ways to bet all over the layout, and they have different payouts. ... (read more)

Sports betting arrives

19 August 2018
Since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way in May for states to legalize sports betting, New Jersey, Delaware and Mississippi have been the quickest off the mark. All already have sportsbooks up and running, a huge change from the decades when only Nevada had legal, full-scale sportsbooks. How did we get ... (read more)

Hundred Play Poker and doubling on blackjacks

16 August 2018
QUESTION: Tell me about Hundred Play Poker. The one machine at the casino near me has 8/5 Double Double Bonus, the same as on the quarter single-hand games, but not as good as the 9/6 DDB on one-hand dollar games. You can play Hundred Play for pennies, two cents or nickels. Is there any advantage to playing ... (read more)

Woulda, coulda, shoulda

12 August 2018
There are times — frustrating times — when playing slots or video poker is a matter of woulda, shoulda, coulda. If only you woulda bet the max on video poker, covered all the paylines on video slots or made the qualifying bet on a progressive like you shoulda, you coulda left the casino with a nice payday. ... The Big 6 and Big 8 are bad bets

9 August 2018
QUESTION: Weird experience at the craps table. Guy next to me kept betting $5 each on Big 6 and Big 8. You know, the ones in the corner with the big red numbers. I told him he'd get better odds if he placed them instead, and he said, "I've tried that, but the dealer keeps trying to upsell me. I want to bet $5, and he keeps insisting on $6. ... (read more)

Creating a new table game

5 August 2018
Introducing a new table game to the public isn't as simple as hitting on a concept that's fun to play, gives the house a reasonable edge and convincing a casino to try it. There's a seemingly endless series of hoops a game developer must jump through. That's something Jason Kobal knows all about with his ... (read more)

Slot screw-up?

2 August 2018
QUESTION: On a three-reel, one-payline slot machine, there are two wires that stretch above the reels resting on top a metal lip extending from one end of the slot to the other. The lip appears to have holes on each end and in the center to secure the wires with rip ties. I have seen where the wiring was only secured at each end but not in the center. ... (read more)

Winning big at roulette

29 July 2018
When my longtime Jim and I get together, talk usually centers on family, kids and a lot of baseball. Gambling rarely comes up. Jim doesn't play much, and when he does, it's Hold'em if the casino has a poker room and blackjack if it doesn't. Imagine my surprise at our June lunch outing when Jim wanted to talk roulette. ...
