My Dinner with Jean (and Brad and John)

20 November 2001
Whenever I'm in Las Vegas, I like to check out new casinos, especially those that cater to locals and are likely to have good video poker and blackjack. Still, at the end of a busy Wednesday, packed with seminars and a trip around the showroom floor at the Global Gaming Expo in the first week of October, ... (read more)

Recommendation to Tip Dealers Generates Controversy

13 November 2001
Several weeks ago, I relayed to you a letter from a dealer who wanted me to put in a word in favor of tipping. I did, pointing out that casino dealers are low-paid service employees who make their living via tips. That doesn't mean players must, or even should, tip rude dealers, incompetent dealers or dealers who are more focused on hustling tips than giving decent service. ... (read more)

Good Video Poker and a Good Slot Club Go Hand in Hand

6 November 2001
Top-of-the-line video poker pay tables bring returns in excess of 99 percent with expert play. Combine that with a slot club that has a strong cash-back program, and you have an irresistible combination. So when Bill Renk, the vice president for sales and marketing at Jumer's Casino Rock Island, told me he had the best deal around for video poker players, I just had to take a look. ... (read more)

A Shuffle Through the Gaming Mailbag

30 October 2001
Q. Would you please write a column of your views on tipping in casinos? I am a dealer on one of the area riverboat casinos and as I hope you are aware we are paid on a base of less than minimum wage. The rest of our salary is made up from tips from patrons. I'm not sure a lot of people are aware of this. ... (read more)

Come On Down! And Play The Price Is Right Slot

23 October 2001
What could be more natural than a TV star on a video screen? Alex Trebek, Dick Clark, Regis Philbin, Monty Hall, Barbara Eden--all have been featured on slot machines since gaming has gone video. Now it's Rod Roddy's turn to come on down. "I love slot machines," says the flamboyant Roddy, the ... (read more)

Slots Hit Multiple Jackpots Too

16 October 2001
Casino players love to share their tales of riches. There are enough days that the house comes out on top that big wins are moments to savor. It seems I started something of an avalanche when I wrote several weeks ago of hitting two $1,200 video poker jackpots within five hands. That led to an ... (read more)

The Casino Answer Man

9 October 2001
Q. Why do people play two slot machines at once when the casino is very busy, like on a Friday or Saturday night? I have experienced this many times, especially on the popular 25-cent machines. Can't people be a little more courteous? Then if you ask them if they are playing both, they answer like they are ready to rip off your head. ... (read more)

Multiple Jackpots Letters

2 October 2001
A few weeks ago, I wrote about hitting the $1,200 jackpot on four aces twice within five hands on a White Hot Aces video poker machine. That brought many replies from readers who wanted to share their experiences with multiple jackpots. Coincidentally, all the replies were from video poker players. ... (read more)

Casinos Take Measures Against Card Counters

25 September 2001
A few years ago, I was playing a six-deck blackjack game in Las Vegas, and more than a full deck's worth of low cards came out in one hand. The table was full of 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s, as each of the five players at the table and the dealer took four or more cards before either standing or busting. ... (read more)

Not All Hand Pays Are Jackpots

18 September 2001
About a year ago, I was playing Triple Play Poker at Hollywood casino in Aurora and made a miracle draw to a royal flush on one hand. After I was paid, the attendant counted out 15 coins -- enough for one maximum-coins play -- and asked me to play once more. It's not unusual for a casino ... (read more)
