Playing Those Traditional Slots

11 April 2021
My list of readers I've heard from multiple times includes a corps of players who still love slots with three mechanical reels. Most have adapted to the video age by playing a mix of games. Some have switched to playing video and skipping the reel-spinners. Only a few refuse to play video slots at all. ... (read more)

Dealer Mistakes

8 April 2021
Question: I was once at a Three Card Poker table and the dealer paid out all bets even when they didn’t qualify. I never said a word. I figured it wasn’t my job to properly train the dealers or to supervise them. Of course, the benefit was modest. ANSWER: I think most table games players have seen situations where payoffs were made by mistake. ... (read more)

Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda Tales

4 April 2021
Reader reports on unusual casino happenings include a set of "woulda, coulda, shoulda" tales. "If only I'd made this move or not made that one, I woulda, coulda, shoulda won big." The latest comes from Giorgi, a video poker player who had second thoughts about a play he made on a quarter 9-6 Double Double Bonus Poker machine. ... (read more)

Doubling 11 versus Dealer 10

1 April 2021
QUESTION: I was thinking about blackjack hands I consider a close call, and started wondering how big a mistake it is to go contrary to basic strategy. The one that really throws me is hard 11 when the dealer has a 10 up. The strategy charts say to double down. I suppose you must win more often than you ... (read more)

Betting with the House in Roulette

28 March 2021
Among the seemingly countless myths against gambling, some die harder than others. Take the myth of roulette players betting with the house. There's no such thing, but the myth has used up far more than nine lives and still has believers. Let's let a reader describe the myth. Calling himself "Mr. Zero," he emailed to ask, "Everybody says the house gets its edge from the zeroes. ... (read more)

Is This the Ultimate Baccarat Strategy?

25 March 2021
QUESTION: My two brothers and I have gone to casinos together for years. My older brother is always looking for an angle. My younger brother and I are always trying to tell him it won't work and we should stick to our usuals. This time it's baccarat with a bad idea that he won't let go. We don't play baccarat. ... Double Double Bonus Poker "Variants"

21 March 2021
One of the video poker games I write about most is Double Double Bonus Poker. There are a couple of reasons for that. I can focus on expert strategies at high pay tables with a fair amount of confidence players will be able to experience the games. Today, I'm going to switch gears and point out a few ... Odds On or Odds For?

18 March 2021
QUESTION: Do you think video poker pay tables are misleading? I look at the bottom line and the payoff on a pair of Jacks is 1 if you bet one coin, two if you bet two, and so on to five if you bet five. But when the payoff comes, it keeps your bet. Bet $1 and get a pair of Jacks, and the machine keeps your bet and you just get $1 back. ... (read more)

A Different Kind of Speed

14 March 2021
When I write about speed at blackjack, it's usually about hands per hour. The fewer players there are at a table, the faster the game. Averages range from fewer than 60 hands per hour at a full seven-player table to more than 200 if you're playing heads up with the dealer. Faster games favor whoever has the edge, and that's usually the house. ... (read more)

Machine Blackjack versus Table-Game Blackjack

11 March 2021
QUESTION: I have a question about video blackjack vs. table blackjack. I found one of those consoles where you could bet $3 minimums. You could split pairs, double down and everything you can do at a table. Blackjacks paid 3-2. The low-limit tables in the same casino paid 6-5 on blackjacks. You have to go to $25 minimums to get 3-2 payoffs, and that's out of my league. ... (read more)
