Roots of Modern Casino Games

16 May 2002
New casino games rarely are truly "new." They tend to be new takes on old games. Spanish 21 is based on blackjack. Caribbean Stud is based on stud poker. So are Let It Ride and Three Card Poker. What about older casino games, the traditional standbys such as blackjack, craps and roulette? They're ... (read more)

Freedom of Choice Can Be Expensive

9 May 2002
Freedom of choice is a good thing for blackjack players who know their basic strategy, but for the majority of players, it largely means the freedom to choose poorly. Players who take the time to learn well are best off with a game that gives them plenty of options. Being allowed to double down on ... (read more)

Innovative Slot Products

2 May 2002
Not long ago, I was asked to serve on a panel evaluating the most innovative casino products of 2001 for the trade publication Casino Executive Reports. As I waded through the mountains of material manufacturers had sent in nominating their products, it was striking just how much came from the slot machine industry. ... (read more)

Casino Etiquette

24 April 2002
Where there are crowds, there will be conflicts. Casinos are no exception. In crowded periods, the customer who wants to play two machines at a time is at odds with others just looking for a place to play. Some blackjack players snap at others over playing decisions. And we have the same smokers vs. ... (read more)

Strategies for Caribbean Stud, Let It Ride, and Three Card Poker

18 April 2002
Upon arriving at the office one day last week, I found the message light blinking away. A reader wanted to talk strategy. "You have your strategy for this game and your strategy for that game, but is all that really necessary?" he wanted to know. "No doubt your way is better, but it's all luck in the ... (read more)

The Casino Answer Man

11 April 2002
A shuffle through the Gaming mailbag, with a little shift in focus from our usual games of chance: Q. On your recommendation, I read Michael Konik's Telling Lies and Getting Paid ($22.05, Huntington Press). I wasn't disappointed. It's a marvelous, witty book with some terrific stories. I have one question, though. ... (read more)

Where's the Quads?

4 April 2002
When I play video poker, I count things. Sometimes I'll track one-card flush draws-—how many I attempt, and how many I make. Sometimes I'll count results each time through my money. If I start with $100 on a dollar machine and bet $5 a hand, I'll count 20 hands and see how much I have left. Sometimes I get sidetracked. ... (read more)

The Grochowskis' Super Weekend in Vegas

28 March 2002
When brother Jay, dad Jerry and I decided to head for Las Vegas for a few days starting the first Sunday of February, we didn't realize it would be Super Bowl Sunday. We were just looking forward to our annual tradition, a few days together filled with video poker, blackjack and the odd turn on the slots and other games. ... (read more)

An Odd Variation of Bonus Poker at Green Valley

21 March 2002
One of my favorite parts of any visit to Las Vegas is checking out the latest and greatest in locals casinos. Slot clubs and meal deals usually are strong, and the gambling has to be better to attract locals who know just what they want. What they want mostly is video poker, and plenty of it. ... A Shuffle Through the Gaming Mailbag

14 March 2002
Q. We went through a friend's eight-deck shoe and found 28 aces, 110 10-values (10s, Jacks, Queens and Kings), and extra 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s. Has this given him, as the house, the advantage when we play blackjack? I've heard high cards and Aces favor the player, and low cards favor the house. We separated the decks to play poker, and that's when we discovered this. ... (read more)
