A Roulette Story

4 September 2002
It was a Friday morning, and I was wandering through the new barge at Hollywood Casino in Aurora, Illinois, checking out the games. A white-haired gentleman introduced himself as Phil, and said we'd met before. "I learned to play roulette at a seminar you gave a few years ago," he said. "I still play slots, but I like to get a little roulette in whenever I'm here. ... (read more)

Jackpot Stories

27 August 2002
Each time I write about players who have hit jackpots under unusual circumstances--back-to-back jackpots, early jackpots that made a trip successful from the start, late jackpots that made up for days of losses--I get a flurry of e-mail from readers wanting to share their stories. And while every ... (read more)

Is It Better to Win Early or Late?

20 August 2002
Is it better to win early, or is it better to win late? Readers have asked me that often over the years. My standard response is that if I'm playing near home, I'd rather win late and bring all the money home. If I'm staying at a casino hotel for a few days, I'd rather win early, put my original stake away and play with the winnings. ... (read more)

Battleship Strategy

13 August 2002
When it comes to trivia, I admit to being something of a showoff. That makes video slots such as Ripley's Believe It or Not and Clue right up my alley. Both Mikohn Gaming slots include bonus rounds in which the player answers multiple choice trivia questions. I've watched people playing Ripley's, and it's often a more social game than most slots. ... (read more)

Going for the Aces in Video Poker

6 August 2002
Those who read my recent column on strategy for Double Bonus Poker may have noticed that most of our adjustments are driven by the enhanced payouts on flushes and straights, along with the lower payoff on two pair. Bonuses on four-of-a-kind hands are one of the defining features of the game, but we can't really do much to increase the frequency of the quads. ... (read more)

Double Bonus Strategy Adjustments

24 July 2002
There is no one perfect strategy for video poker. To get the most out of a game that offers higher than usual payoffs on flushes, we must adjust our strategy to maximize flush opportunities. In a game that pays a big bonus on four Aces, we'll sometimes ignore other potential winners to make a run at the jackpot. ... (read more)

A Shuffle through the Gaming Mailbag

17 July 2002
Q. Video poker and blackjack are the only casino games I play. I am not an expert, but I believe I'm better than the average or basic strategy player. There's a question I want you to answer. How long is "in the long run?" Whenever I'm dealt a blackjack and the dealer has an Ace up, I take even money. ... (read more)

Video Poker Strategy

10 July 2002
In recent weeks, we've focused on strategies to narrow the house edge at table games. Let's turn now to video poker, another game in which our choices make a difference in our wins and losses. Video poker is dealt from a randomly shuffled 52-card electronic deck in which each card has a equal chance of being dealt. ... (read more)

Basic Strategy for Spanish 21

3 July 2002
In the last couple of weeks, we've looked at basic strategy in blackjack. Sit down at most blackjack tables in any jurisdiction, play basic strategy and you'll narrow the house edge to a half-percent or so, perhaps a little more or a little less depending on house rules. ... (read more)

Going Beyond Basic Strategy

27 June 2002
Nearly all players will benefit by learning basic strategy for blackjack and following it to the letter. But advanced players should understand that basic strategy is ... well ... basic, and there are some things they can do to get a little extra out of blackjack without ... (read more)
