John Grochowski Gaming Guru - Page 163Bonehead Blackjack1 April 2003
In my time playing blackjack in casinos, I thought I'd seen just about
every ill-conceived strategy imaginable.
I've seen players stand on Ace-4--a soft 15. Doesn't matter what the
dealer's up card is, there's never any reason to stand on a soft total
of ... (read more)
New Games from Other Manufacturers25 March 2003
Having looked at the latest wares from most of the major slot
manufacturers lately, I've been eager to move on to other topics again.
It appears I was a little too eager for some tastes.
A couple stopped me in a casino, and the woman let me know she wanted
more. ... (read more)
John Grochowski reviews the 2003 American Casino Guide18 March 2003
Each year about this time, I look forward to receiving Steve Bourie's
annual
American Casino Guide ($14.95, Casino Vacations), which seems to get
more informative with every edition. Working state by state, the 2003
Guide lists every casino in the United States, along ... (read more)
Grochowski Reviews11 March 2003
Many years ago, when I was young, writing sports in Colorado and working
on a very tight budget, the only gambling I did was in occasional
nickel-ante poker games. I won some and lost some--I was neither the
best player at the table, nor the worst.
As in many low stakes, amateur games, there was a lot of bluffing. ... (read more)
Q and A Session with the Casino Answer Man4 March 2003
One thing I've found when I've given seminars over the last decade is
that a packed room always means plenty of questions. So it was when I
was invited to speak to a seniors' fair recently in Oakbrook Terrace,
Ill. With every seat taken, I left half my allotted hour for a ... (read more)
More New Games from IGT25 February 2003
IGT has games with big, bright top boxes, with the wheel atop Wheel of
Fortune or the 3-D figures of Jed and Granny designed to draw attention
from across the casino.
IGT has video slots on its I-game platform, multiline games such as Cops
and Donuts, Tabasco, Dragon's Gold and the Great Turkey Shoot. ... (read more)
New Slots from Mikohn18 February 2003
"Slots," "skill" and "knowledge" are not usually words that go together.
Slot machines traditionally are games of pure chance. You win if you're
in the right place at the right time, and lose if you're not.
That's even true on the bonus rounds of most modern multiline video
slots. ... (read more)
New Slots from Bally Gaming11 February 2003
A couple of decades ago, Bally Gaming was THE big name in slot machines.
That changed with the ascendance of IGT, which today is by far the
nation's leading manufacturer of slots.
Bally has stepped up its aggressiveness in recent years, encouraged by
the success of its Betty Boop series and other games such as Popeye and
Blondie. ... (read more)
New Slots from IGT4 February 2003
It was the last day of the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, and I was
taking advantage of the thinning crowds to get a good look at new games
in the IGT booth. IGT is the world's largest manufacturer of slot
machines, always has the biggest, most varied collection at the ... (read more)
New Slots from Konami and Shuffle Master28 January 2003
Most of the slot machines we see on casino floors are produced by a
handful of manufacturers. IGT is by far the largest slotmaker, while
WMS, Bally Gaming, A.C. Coin, Aristocrat, Atronic and Mikohn have carved
out shares of the market.
At the annual ... (read more)
