New Year's Resolutions Revisited

16 March 2004
When I gave my annual New Year's resolutions for gamblers a while back, I mentioned that an old friend of mine was teasing me, giving me the business about playing Scrooge by urging caution with money just a day after Christmas. But I heard from a couple of readers who didn't think the advice was Scroogelike at all. ... (read more)

Better Buffet and Sandwiches to Savor

9 March 2004
Food service at the Buffington Harbor casinos - Trump and Majestic Star - has taken a giant leap forward with the opening of the Passports World Class Buffet, managed by the Compass Group. On the first floor of the Buffington Harbor pavilion, it's in the same location as the old buffet - a dreary cafeteria-style line that satisfied neither Trump, Majestic Star nor the customers. ... New Poker Room at Trump Casino

2 March 2004
There's no doubt that poker is about the hottest thing going right now, thanks largely to the success of the tournament poker telecasts on the Travel Channel and ESPN. Despite the high public interest, there aren't a whole lot of places to play in Chicago-area casinos. Space is at a premium and more profitably used for slot machines. ... (read more)

New Year's Resolutions

24 February 2004
"How ya doin', Scrooge?" My old friend Bob was on the phone, with a greeting that was a little out of the ordinary. Scrooge? Me? "Yeah, you. I know what you're up to." What? I've denied no one fuel for the fire, nor uttered a single "humbug." "No, but you're about to. The day after ... (read more)

Grochowski Reviews - Part 2

17 February 2004
We took a look at several books last week. Let's wrap up our roundup with two more books, a nice piece of slot machine software and a little something to help blackjack players. The Craps Underground by Frank Scoblete ($24.95, Bonus Books). The author handed me his latest when I arrived in Tunica, Miss., last month to speak at the Frank Scoblete Gamblers Jamboree. ... Grochowski Reviews

10 February 2004
Last year was a busy year for publishers of gambling books and software - so much so that I've barely been able to keep up with all the new product that has crossed my desk. This week and next, I'm going to clear my bookshelf of items I've been meaning to review, but haven't gotten to. More Frugal Gambling by Jean Scott with Angela Sparks ($14.95, Huntington Press). ... A Shuffle through the Gaming Mailbag

3 February 2004
Q. I can tell by walking around Empress and Harrah's in Joliet that there are fewer people playing there since they started charging admission. Have the Indiana boats had an increase? B.D., via e-mail A. Yes, business has increased at Indiana casinos in the Chicago area, although not by as much as the dropoff in Illinois. ... (read more)

A Shuffle through the Gaming Mailbag

27 January 2004
Q. During several recent visits to casinos, I have observed a behavior in video slot machines that makes me wonder whether there is a random number generator override mechanism that periodically alters the machine's take in order to maximize its profit. What I have observed is that the machine will ... (read more)

New Table Games at the G2E

20 January 2004
On the final day of the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, I was wandering the back aisles, away from the slot manufacturers, to see what table games and other new wares were being pitched to the casino industry. Most of the new table games - as you'd expect, if you've been looking around table game pits in ... (read more)

The Casino and Gaming Television Network

13 January 2004
I was near the end of a conversation with Robert Carlsson, co-founder and co-chairman of the planned Casino and Gaming Television network, and he had a question. "What do you think of the idea?" I told him I'd long thought an all-gaming cable network was inevitable. Three times in the last several years, I've spoken with people who wanted to do a weekly casino TV show. ... (read more)
