Advice for Vegas Tourists

3 August 2004
When riverboat casinos and Native American casinos started to open in the early 1990s, some Las Vegas operators feared the possible threat to their businesses. They turned out to be no threat at all. Las Vegas continued to grow, and before long the conventional wisdom soon turned to regarding newer ... (read more)

Chicago-Area Slot Paybacks

27 July 2004
Slot players looking for a little better run for their money frequently ask which Chicago area casino pays back to players the highest percentage of coins wagered. Month in and month out, the simplest answer would be that Grand Victoria in Elgin has the highest payback percentage. In March, the most ... (read more)

A Shuffle Through the Gaming Mailbag: Chuck-a-luck and Slot Payback Percentages

20 July 2004
Q. I found a chuck-a-luck game online and have a question about how the odds change when betting two numbers. I started betting 3 and 4 together over and over. I slowly started increasing my bank. The payoffs on the game were: Single 1:1; Double 2:1; Triple 10:1. I did manage to hit one triple, but most of my bank increase came from hitting two singles and doubles. ... (read more)

Q & A with Grochowski

13 July 2004
When folks at Sun Publications - the Sun-Times' sister papers in the western suburbs - asked me to speak at their Senior Showcase in Naperville recently, they scheduled my seminar last. That way, no one had to clear the room to make way for another speaker if the question-and-answer session ... (read more)

Hold 'Em Poker Books

6 July 2004
Until recently, live poker in casinos has been in steep decline. Many Nevada card rooms have closed, and most casinos in newer gaming jurisdictions never added poker because space is more profitably used on slot machines. But thanks to televised poker on the Travel Channel and ESPN, poker - especially Texas hold'em - is on a popularity surge. ... (read more)

Update on the Blue Chip Casino

29 June 2004
When the new blues bar opened at the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, Ind., it was just the latest in a series of changes and upgrades at the property about an hour's drive east of Chicago. I've come to expect change as casinos compete for customers, but when I toured Blue Chip a few weeks ago, ... (read more)

A Shuffle through the Gaming Mailbag: Short-Pays on High-Limit Video Poker

22 June 2004
Q. I visited the Casino Queen in East St. Louis and was surprised to see changes on the payouts. On $5 9-6 Jacks or Better, the 250-coin payout for straight flushes had been slashed to 239 coins, and on $5 10-7 Double Bonus the same had been done on four of a kind, 5s through Kings. I suspect this was done to enable players to stay under the threshold for a W-2G form. ... (read more)

Blackjack Basic Strategy - Part 3

15 June 2004
Anytime you say "always," you run the risk of being confronted by someone who knows an exception. So it was in the mid-1990s when I wrote in this column that blackjack players always should split Aces. That brought a letter from a reader who pointed out a few situations when splitting Aces is not the best play. ... (read more)

Blackjack Basic Strategy - Part 2

8 June 2004
It's been decades since I learned the basic rules of blackjack. I was about 11 or 12 when I was taught that Aces count as 1 or 11, faces count as 10, numbered cards count as their face value, if your total is more than 21 you lose, otherwise the hand closest to 21 wins. I can pinpoint the day and place, if not the year. ... (read more)

Blackjack Basic Strategy - Part 1

1 June 2004
Walking past the cashier's cage at Harrah's in Joliet, I was suddenly aware that someone wanted to talk to me. Something important apparently was on his mind, since he left his place in line, still carrying a stack of chips. "You're John, right?" he asked. "I won't try to say the last name." That's me. ...
