John Grochowski Gaming Guru - Page 154The Future of Slot Clubs28 December 2004
Slot machine-playing regulars are used to the drill: When they sit down at a
machine, they insert a player rewards card into a reader. A small screen
flashes a message that can be as simple as "Accepted," to let the customer
know play is being tracked.
In more forthcoming clubs, more information is offered, with a message such
as "Welcome (player's name). ... (read more)
Max Rubin Invites Card Counters to Play21 December 2004
Some would say that Max Rubin was the maverick, even the radical in the
panel discussion "Game Protection: Advantage Players" at the recent Global
Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. I'd call him a voice of reason.
How does Rubin deal with blackjack card counters in his role of training pit
personnel at the ... (read more)
The Best Video Poker Plays in the Chicago Area14 December 2004
For the last couple of years, when readers have asked about the best
places in the Chicago area to play video poker, I've responded that
quarter players get the best deal at Majestic Star in Gary, while for
dollar play, Empress in Joliet has a small edge, with Majestic Star
second.
That ... (read more)
Grochowski Reviews "The Vegas Kid"7 December 2004
Last week's column of book reviews eased the strain on my shelves only
slightly. Let's check out a few more worthy contenders for your reading
list, with a new book on Texas Hold'em by a poker pro, some light, fun
fiction by a casino veteran and an outstanding biography I've been meaning
to review ... (read more)
Hunting Whales and Making Millions Playing Slots30 November 2004
When publishers send me copies of gambling books by other authors, I at
least page through every one. I don't review them all. Last year, I
received a blackjack book that was so full of bad advice that I ripped it
to pieces before recycling, just so there would be no danger of that copy
ever ... (read more)
Report from the 2004 Global Gaming Expo23 November 2004
Clint Eastwood was at the Global Gaming Expo at the Las Vegas Convention
Center earlier this month, promoting WMS Gaming's new line of slot
machines bearing his image.
Pamela Anderson was there, and Ann-Margret, Pele, Drew Carey, Paul
Rodriguez - well, you get the idea. Slot machine ... (read more)
Destroying Planets for Dollars16 November 2004
The time: Thursday, Oct. 7, about 6 p.m. The place: The SpaceQuest casino
at the Las Vegas Hilton.
My mission: To blow up planets without triggering a supernova.
I'd seen nine others fail while waiting for my turn at the console. We
could see it all happening on the giant plasma display on the SpaceQuest
wall - dozens of planets waiting to be exploded. ... (read more)
The ABCs of Slots9 November 2004
It's not that long ago that if you were playing a slot machine, you
probably were playing a game manufactured by IGT. And if it wasn't an IGT
machine, it was a Bally game, or perhaps one by Sigma. Certainly, the
machine had three spinning reels, with no bonuses and no video screen.
Even by the ... (read more)
Acing ACES Bonus Poker2 November 2004
My husband and I were playing those Game King machines with a bunch of
different video poker games on them. He started playing 8-5 Bonus Poker, and
I noticed that there was also 8-5 ACES Bonus Poker, which gives the same
payoffs as Bonus Poker except that four aces in the right order pays 4,000
coins ... (read more)
Vegas Vacation: Glitz and Glamour or Good Games?26 October 2004
A question for Las Vegas visitors: Do you regard a trip to casino
gambling's capital city a glitzy vacation, where the highlight is the
glamor of the Strip, or do you like to search out the best odds while
looking for a better shot to win than you'll find in other parts of the
country?
A ... (read more)
