Sports betting 101

25 September 2007
For someone spent, oh, a couple of decades or so working in newspaper sports departments before turning my attention from batting averages and quarterback ratings to house edges and basic strategies, I'll admit to being really bad at sports betting. It's not so much the losing bets that bother me, as the ones I thought I had sussed out, but failed to put my money where my mind was. ... (read more)

Pong and Guaranteed Play Video Poker

18 September 2007
Sometimes the road from showcase to casino slot floors takes a few months. Sometimes it's a few years. In the few months department, there's IGT's Guaranteed Play Video Poker, one of the most buzzworthy products at the 2006 Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas last November. On the few years side, there's Bally Technologies' Pong, which I reviewed in its initial incarnation after the 2004 G2E. ... (read more)

Past results have no effect on future outcomes

11 September 2007
For about a lifetime now, I've been telling gamblers that in most games, past results have no effect on future outcomes. (Blackjack is an exception, since each card dealt out changes the composition of the remaining deck, altering the odds of the game.) The roulette ball has landed on eight black numbers in a row? The chances of the next one being black are still 18 in 38. ... (read more)

Double double bonus poker

4 September 2007
My video poker-playing friend Bob has mostly confined his play to three games over the years: Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild and Double Bonus Poker. "Jacks or Better, because the strategy is easy and there always seems to be someone who'll give you the 9-6 pay table," he explained. "Deuces Wild, because you get four 2s often enough that you always feel like you have a chance to win. ... (read more)

A Shuffle Through the Gaming Mailbag

28 August 2007
Q. I found a craps book with a lot of tips that some of the others hadn't written about. Who would have known that you can win a bet on Big Red? I've done it a couple of times and made $100 and $20 just by timing and counting the number of 7s that have or haven't shown up. It's really a gut feeling. ... (read more)

Magic at the Par-A-Dice

21 August 2007
I wouldn't exactly say I was expecting magic at the Par-A-Dice casino in East Peoria, but I had to wonder. At 8 p.m. on the Monday night when my wife Marcy and I visited, a name was being drawn for a $500 prize. And who, in the name of the "Deathly Hallows," was the winner? A woman named Mary Potter. ... A look at the Four Winds Casino

14 August 2007
A week before the Four Winds casino's Aug. 2 opening, I asked general manager Matt Harkness where he expected the customers to come from. "We expect most will come within about a 50-mile radius" of the New Buffalo, Mich., site, he said, while also explaining he thinks the customer base will reach ... (read more)

Heartland Poker Tour

7 August 2007
While the big national casino news of the last several weeks has revolved around the World Series of Poker at the Rio in Las Vegas, poker is once again making a local splash with the latest Heartland Poker Tour no-limit Hold'em event aboard the Majestic Star II casino in Gary's Buffington Harbor. With a ... (read more)

Practice may not make perfect, but it can spring surprises

31 July 2007
Practice may not make perfect in video poker, but it can spring some surprises on you. I got a surprise of my own recently as I was practicing my strategy on Not So Ugly Deuces Wild. It's a game I hadn't played in some time, but I was planning a day at a casino that offered it. With expert play, NSUD pays 99.7 percent with expert play. ... (read more)
