First craps experience

17 June 2008
Readers have inundated my e-mail box with stories of their first casino trips, and what it was that kept them coming back. Last week, I shared a few of those tales. Let's go back to e-mail for a story from George in Pennsylvania, whose drive to Atlantic City with his wife, brother and sister-in-law was the ... (read more)

First-time casino stories

10 June 2008
A few weeks ago, I wrote of my first casino trip and things that kept me coming back. I invited readers to tell their stories — and it seems everybody has one. So many have responded that I'm going share a few tales this week and next. Diane: When I was graduating high school in 1969 my parents asked me if I wanted to go to Vegas for two weeks with my sister and brothers as a gift. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

3 June 2008
Q. My wife and I are ardent players. Are there any games where one should keep only a pair of aces when dealt two pair? Since quad aces pays much higher, should one maximize the opportunities for quads? A. Hold just two aces instead of two pair in Double Double Bonus Poker, or Super Aces, where there's a ... Nongaming tips

27 May 2008
Once every three weeks, I head into the studio at WBBM-AM in Chicago to record my next six "Beat the Odds" tips. Most deal with odds and strategies, but my producer, Jim Mulvaney, tells me his favorites are the quirky ones about casino culture, comps and the like. So let's stray from the beaten path a ... My first casino trip

For every casino player, there has to be a first time. But what is it about that first trip to the slots or tables that leads to a second? I can only speak for myself, though if you care to e-mail your stories to casinoanswerman@casinoanswerman.com, I'd be happy to share them in the coming weeks. As ... (read more)

Blackjack basic strategy quiz - answers

It's been a while since I've popped a quiz, and a while since I've delved into blackjack basic strategy. See if you know the best way to play the following five hands, all among the most-often misplayed hands in the game. For all hands, assume a six-deck game in which the dealer stands on all 17s, you may ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

6 May 2008
Q. What can you tell me about Blackjack Switch? I saw a table and was intrigued, but couldn't bring myself to sit down and play without learning more about the game first. I guess I lack a little of that gambling spirit. A. If the gambling spirit includes going into a game unprepared, I guess I lack it too. ... (read more)

Grochowski reviews 'The Virgin Kiss and Other Adventures'

29 April 2008
I'd like to tell you that I've always said I'd read anything Frank Scoblete wrote, even if it was about having dinner with his in-laws. I'd like to tell you that, but it wouldn't strictly be true. I've never thought about Scoblete's in-laws, at least until I read his latest book, The Virgin Kiss and Other Adventures ($17.95, Research Services Unlimited, 303 pages, softcover). ... Hedge bets at craps

22 April 2008
The following e-mail exchange is real. The names have been withheld to protect the innocent. What do you think of using C&E as a hedge? For those unfamiliar with craps lingo, C&E is shorthand for "craps and 11." It's a one-roll proposition that puts half your wager on any craps — 2, 3 and 12 — and half on 11. ... (read more)
