Should I bet max coins?

22 February 2011
It used to be so easy advising players on whether to bet maximum coins on slot machines. You'll get the highest payback percentage when you bet maximum coins, I'd tell them. Stay within your budget, but if you're going to bet less than the max, don't play progressive slots, and don't play buy-a-pays where ... (read more)

When to play progressive video poker

15 February 2011
It was late on a Monday afternoon; my wife, Marcy, and I were both free; and we decided to take a drive to one of the nearby casinos for dinner and a little playtime. When we walked in, Marcy asked, "Do they have the Penguins game here?" She's enamored of Lucky Penny slot machines with what WMS Gaming ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

8 February 2011
Q. I play almost exclusively video poker (on a "keep perspective and play for fun" basis only). I have wondered if it is worth the effort to try to find the machines that pay the best odds, and what the best way to do that is. What do I look for? The full house odds, the straight odds, the flush odds, or a combination of all? A. ... (read more)

Scoblete's 'Slot Conquest'

1 February 2011
The year 2010 was a busy one for Frank Scoblete, one of gambling's most prolific, as well as entertaining, writers. He rolled out four books through his new publisher, with Slots Conquest ($16.95, Triumph Books) rounding out the quartet late in the year. Like everything Scoblete writes, it's fun to read as well as informative. ... (read more)

The blackjack dealer's ace

25 January 2011
I've played blackjack for a very long time, and I can recall dealer's referring to deuces as "the dealer's ace" going back at least to the 1980s. No doubt the reference goes back much farther than that. So I wasn't at all surprised when a reader e-mailed to say he'd heard both dealers and players call the ... (read more)

New wrinkles on the blackjack felt

18 January 2011
Blackjack has been the most popular casino table game for just about half a century now, having overtaken craps in the early 1960s. Card counters can gain a mathematical edge on the game, and the notion that blackjack is beatable is a powerful idea, even among the large majority who can't really beat ... (read more)

New Year's resolutions

11 January 2011
Over the course of a year, I give a lot of advice to gamblers. Split aces and eights against any dealer up card in blackjack, but not fives or 10s. Stay away from the one-roll propositions in craps. Break up a full house that includes three aces to go for the big payoff in any video poker game that pays 800 ... (read more)

New video poker at G2E 2010

4 January 2011
IGT has been the king of video poker since … well … ever since there's been video poker. The 2010 Global Gaming Expo at the Las Vegas Convention Center was ample demonstration of that. While video poker director John Daley showed off IGT's latest attractions, none of the other established slot manufacturers ... (read more)

Test your ESP with IGT's Ghostbusters slot machine

28 December 2010
Players know slot machines as tests of luck, with a few rare games incorporating tests of skill. Tests of psychic power? Well, as much as I'd like to try a little mind over matter, reel or virtual, I've never been able to either influence or predict outcome. Still, I was ready to get into the spirit ... (read more)

Bally's U-Spin technology is a winner

14 December 2010
When Bally Technologies showed off its U-Spin technology at G2E 2009, Bally was pretty sure it had a winner. It did. Since an April roll-out, more than 1,200 Cash Spin games have been installed. At G2E 2010 in November at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Bally showed a number of U-Spin games, ready to follow up on the success of Cash Spin, the first in the line. ... (read more)
