A sympathetic ear for two slot players

24 January 2012
When readers share stories about their casino exploits, it's usually about big wins. Let's face it, the wins are more memorable and more fun to talk about than the more common losing sessions. Still, every now and then a reader looking for a sympathetic ear will e-mail me with a tale of a day when nothing went right. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

19 January 2012
Q. When playing video poker, if you get a pair of deuces and a pair of 7s in Double Double Bonus Poker or Triple Double Bonus Poker, are you supposed to get rid of the 7s and just keep the 2s for the better payout? A. No, you're better off holding both pairs. The chances of drawing a full house are a ... (read more)

Giving slot players a choice

17 January 2012
When it comes to game design, I'm always on board with giving players choices. Whether we're talking the strategy options inherent in video poker, the choice of bonus event packages that come with the decision to defend or attack earth in WMS Gaming's Attack From Mars/Revenge From Mars slots or the chance to ... Slot machine show and tell

17 January 2012
Last spring, I relayed a number of stories from readers about their favorite slot games, and what attracted them. Ever since, I’ve been receiving e-mails about other favorites. Let’s share a few more: Zachary: I’ll bet you get this one a lot. My favorite is Reel ’Em In, no question. It’s the game that got me to where I like the slots. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

12 January 2012
Q. I have a question about the new server-based slots. I get that the games aren't allowed to be changed while you're playing. But what if you're just taking a little break? My husband and I usually play together, right next to each other if we can find seats at games we both like. If I have my husband watch ... (read more)

Mississippi Stud strategy

10 January 2012
Any card game that requires decisions by players has its dividing lines. When the dealer has a 10 in blackjack, you hit when you have a hard total of 16 or less, but stand on 17 or higher. In Caribbean Stud poker, you stay in the game with a bet of double your ante when you have ace-king with no other face cards if one of your other three cards matches the dealer's face-up card. ... A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

5 January 2012
Q. We're planning a bachelor party, and some guys want to play blackjack, but nobody wants to bet big money. We're narrowed down to two places that will let us play $5 a hand. One will cost us $20 an hour per person for the reservation, then the game is six decks, dealer stands on all 17s, double after split, resplit to four hands. ... (read more)

Gamblers' New Year's resolutions

3 January 2012
Casinos are filled with temptations. They're fantasy zones, where most of the time we don't bet with actual money. We play with chips, or credits on a meter. Those chips and credits are bought with money, and can be exchanged for the real thing, but while we're playing it sometimes doesn't feel like we're spending money. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

29 December 2011
Q. I have a question on slot payout percentages. On any given slot machine, is there a minimum payout percentage that is mandated by the gaming commission, or can the casino set the payback percentage to whatever they want? One other question: Are all slot machines of one denomination set at the same payback percentage? Are all 2-cent slots set to pay back at the same percentage? A. ... (read more)

Be careful with casino-wide slot paybacks

27 December 2011
Most of the time, I ignore casino-wide slot machine payback percentages. That slot machines at one casino return 92.5% of wagers to players while a competitor returns 93.1% doesn't yield much useful information. That's because there's a hidden statistical influence at work. Does the casino have strong ... (read more)
