Reward of rewards cards and card counting, too!

6 January 2013
QUESTION: You guys who always tell people to use their rewards cards when they play miss something. If I use a card, the casino has a record of everything I do in the casino. Wouldn’t they pass that record on to the IRS? It seems to me that if I use my card, I could wind up with a tax bill. ANSWER: I receive this kind of question often, at least four or five times a year. ... (read more)

Some great gambling books

3 January 2013
Over the years, I’ve read and reviewed many a blackjack book. Rarely have I recommended one simply because it’s so much fun to read. I’d doing it now with Glen Wiggy’s “1536 Free Waters and Other Blackjack Endeavors" ($18.95, iUniverse). Subtitled “Finding Profit and Humor in Card-Counting,” Wiggy’s work ... (read more)

Caribbean Stud "look see" and "put" bets at craps

27 December 2012
QUESTION: I was playing Caribbean Stud, and people were looking at each other’s hands. The dealer warned everyone to stop. Then the pit boss came over and said that wasn’t allowed, and if he saw it again, he’d void the hand and maybe even ask players to leave the table. Can you tell me why? It’s not like this is draw poker. ... (read more)

Wild new side bets at blackjack

24 December 2012
As the most popular casino table game for roughly a half century, blackjack has an intrigue of its own. Shouldn't players play higher-denomination slot machines?

20 December 2012
QUESTION: You’ve written repeatedly that higher-denomination slots pay more than lower-denomination games, and that dollars pay more than quarters, which pay more than nickels, etc. How do you know that? If that’s true, why doesn’t everyone play dollar slots? Shouldn’t you go to the games where the paybacks ... (read more)

Players and dealers talk blackjack

17 December 2012
Blackjack players can be a bit uncomfortable talking strategy during breaks at the table. The more advanced players may not want to tip the casino off to how good they are, though it really doesn’t take much observation to tell those who know their basic strategy from those who don’t. So the table talk at ... (read more)

Betting those hot numbers in roulette

13 December 2012
QUESTION: What do you think of a system where you stick with the hot numbers in roulette? My friend likes to look at the boards at the tables where they post the last 18 numbers. If one appears three or more times, that’s what she bets. ANSWER: It’s as good as any other system, which is to say that on a double-zero wheel, it has the same 5.26% house edge as drawing numbers out of a hat. ... (read more)

Baccarat ties that bind

10 December 2012
One of the first things baccarat players learn if they take the odds of the game at all seriously is that the tie bet is one to avoid. The bet on banker is one of the best bets in the house with a house edge of 1.06%, and the bet on player isn’t far behind, with a house edge of 1.24%. But ties? Those who are tempted to chase the 8-1 payoff spot the house a whopping 14.4%. ... (read more)

IGT is the giant in the room

6 December 2012
Video poker players may not consciously seek out International Game Technology machines, but that’s where they play. Well over 90% of the poker machines we see in casinos are IGT games -- and that’s likely an understatement. So naturally enough, video poker was a big part of the IGT booth at Global Gaming ...
