The Palazzo makes its long-awaited grand debut in Las Vegas21 January 2008
Over the top, yet sophisticated. That's the phrase Rob Goldstein, president and chief operating officer of The Palazzo Resort-Hotel-Casino, used to describe his company's new $1.9 billion resort in Las Vegas and the same could be said for the pomp and pageantry that was on display for the property's grand opening last week. Flanked by his wife, Miriam, Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson began the event with a ceremonial flip of a giant gold switch on Thursday night that launched a spectacular music, light, and firework display and kicked off a star-studded weekend of special events. A guest list that included the likes of Hillary Swank, Mandy Moore, James Denton, Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O'Connell was treated to everything from a Diana Ross concert to a private dinner cooked up by the likes of Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck and Mario Batali. With its 3,000 expansive suites, the 50-story Palazzo Las Vegas has literally taken luxury to new heights. The Palazzo is now the tallest hotel tower in Las Vegas and combined with its sister next door, the Venetian Resort, the two properties feature more than 7,000 suites. The Palazzo, The Venetian and the Sands Expo and Convention Center are also now the world's biggest indoor structure at 19 million square feet. "[Las Vegas] is the entertainment capital of the world so it is the statement of all statements that this is the largest resort ever built," said Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO William Weidner. "In a town that has the largest resorts in the world, to be the largest of the largest is really interesting. Las Vegas is our home base. As much as we are building in places like Asia and as much as we're developing in places like Singapore, it's still wonderful to come home and provide this kind of entertainment for not only the American people, but for people across the world." Highlighted by a flagship, 85,000-square-foot Barneys New York, The Shoppes at The Palazzo has more than 60 luxury boutiques. The Shoppes were opened to the public on Friday. It features a mall esplanade under a glass walkway and a two-story waterfall. In addition to Barneys New York, 20 stores and luxury brands are making their Las Vegas debuts at The Palazzo. They include Chloe, Tory Burch, Christian Louboutin, Diane Von Furstenberg, Van Cleef & Arpels, Anya Hindmarch, Poleci, Lambertson Truex, Phillipe Charriol, Edidi, Piaget and Michael Kors. Additionally, The Palazzo offers a variety of cuisines from a collection of award-winning chefs such as CarneVino by Mario Batali, CUT by Wolfgang Puck, Table 10 by Emeril Lagasse and Restaurant Charlie by Charlie Trotter. "Sheldon has topped himself again," beamed Puck at the opening. "This is a beautiful hotel. I think it's amazing. I think being here with all of the world's best chefs it's going to make for an extraordinary destination. You basically have some of the best restaurants in the world all on one floor." Saturday evening's grand opening celebration finale featured Luminaries and Legends, a concert hosted by Wayne Brady with performers including Ross, Seal, Andy Garcia and the Cineson All-Stars as well as the cast of JERSEY BOYS, which debuts at The Palazzo this spring. A new 65,000-square-foot Canyon Ranch SpaClub and a Lamborghini showroom, gift store and cafe, will open shortly and two new exciting night club venues should be ready within the next few months. The Palazzo is also home to the Las Vegas version of the 40/40 Club sports bar and lounge - the brainchild of music mogul Jay-Z, as well as the all-day, all-night Grand Lux Cafe. Suites at The Palazzo start at $199 per night and feature sunken living rooms decorated with a distinctly modern European design. "People are telling us it's the best property they've ever seen," added Adelson, whose company also owns and operates The Venetian Macao in China, which is the second-largest building in the world with 18 restaurants and a hotel with 3,000 rooms. "In many ways, the opening of The Palazzo represents for us the completion of a vision that started with the construction of The Venetian. For our guests, it provides a new experience and opportunity to savor some of the world's best dining, shopping, accommodations and entertainment all under one roof." Related Links
