Four Card Poker – Finally

28 May 2004
For those of you who have been waiting for my promised Part Three of Four Card Poker….HERE IT IS! I apologize for the delay, but I wanted to make sure I had the strategy as close to perfect as possible. When you consider that, with 5 cards to the Player, 1 Dealer up-card and 5 Dealer down cards, there ... (read more)

Hunting for Royals

17 May 2004
Which would you choose if you had your choice? Winning $500, BUT, you will win this money in small batches of ordinary Four of a Kinds and lots of Straights, Flushes and Full Houses. A prosperous but humdrum victory. The second alternative is that you can go home having won $250, but you'll achieve this by losing most of the week and then hitting a $1000 Royal Flush on your last night. ... (read more)

The Cost of Impatience

11 May 2004
You've done all your homework and bought a book on Video Poker. You've memorized the important paytables and strategy tables. You head out to the casino and when you get there, you spend a few moments looking around for a game you want to play. It's a lot easier than it used to be find a game you like. ... (read more)

Pairs, Pairs Everywhere!

30 April 2004
I recently had a conversation with a friend about Video Poker. He's not a big gambler, but strong on math. We were talking about the frequency of Pairs in the Pre-draw hand of Video Poker. My friend was a little surprised when I said that about 40% of all Pre-draw hands result in a Pair (not necessarily Jacks or Better, of course). ... (read more)

What the Heck is a Razgu?

22 April 2004
What the heck is a 'Razgu'? Is it a good hand? Is it a bad hand? Is it the name of a baseball team? The term Razgu was coined by one of my Dad's Poker playing friends to refer to a really bad hand. Most often, it means a Video Poker hand, which is so bad, that there is nothing worth keeping. ... (read more)

Four Card Poker – Part Two

14 April 2004
First of all, I have to say mea culpa. In last week's article describing Four Card Poker, I made a silly error in describing the game. Last week, I stated that the Player gets four cards, and the Dealer gets five cards. In reality, the Player gets Five Cards and the Dealer gets Six Cards! I assure you ... (read more)

Four Card Poker – Part One

7 April 2004
I first found out about Four Card Poker by Shuffle Master a few months ago. I was actually reading their quarterly report and it made mention of their latest game. Being the 'new kid on the block', I was eager to find out about this new game and be the first or at least amongst the first analysts to take a close look at it. ... (read more)

Where to begin when you want to start

1 April 2004
You've finally decided you're willing to give Video Poker a try. But, how do you start? Where do you start? You've read how Video Poker can give you a much better chance of winning than slots, but quite frankly, sit down at a Video Poker with no idea what to do, and you may wish you had stuck to Slots. ... How can they do that?

25 March 2004
Because of who I am, what I do and the amount of time I spend reading or talking to people who are essentially Video Poker Experts, I sometimes forget just how many people there are who still play by intuition or common sense. Last night I had the opportunity to talk to one such player. He's a very typical recreational player, going to the casinos a few times a year. ... (read more)

Two Pair or not Two Pair

18 March 2004
One of the most confusing hands in Video Poker has got to be the Two Pair. It wasn't always this way. Back in the days of just Jacks or Better, I think most people quickly recognized the benefits of keeping the two pair even when one of the pair was a pair of Jacks or Better. When the math gurus came ... (read more)
