3-5-7 as easy as 1-2-3

28 June 2005
It would be hard to argue that Shuffle Master has created the majority of the successful new games in the past decade. There are, however, some successful games that came from other sources. One of these new games is called 3-5-7, and it comes courtesy of Ya Awada of Gaming Entertainment, Inc. ... (read more)

Is Payback Overrated?

28 April 2005
Is payback overrated? I don't mean 'payback' as in getting even with your neighbor for mowing his lawn at 6 a.m. on a Sunday. I mean payback as in the return on your 'investment' in a casino. The first rule of Expert Strategy is to know which games to play. Generally speaking, this means playing games with higher returns, or paybacks. ... (read more)

Reminiscing

23 March 2005
This past week marked 7 years since my Dad, Lenny Frome, passed away. I really can't believe it was that long ago. Barely a day goes by when I don't want to pick up the phone and talk to him about something: all the more since I began writing and analyzing games. The only regret I have about giving up ... Keeping a Straight Face

1 March 2005
Drawing to a 4-card Straight when you're playing Poker against your buddies at home can make a lot of sense. Basically, you've got an 8 in 47 chance of drawing that Straight, and 12 additional chances to draw a Pair. If it's a high-ranking straight you're going for, the hand looks respectable. ... Feeling Flushed?

9 February 2005
Unlike Straights, Flushes are much easier to contend with. You don't have to worry about whether it's inside or outside. You don't have to bother counting High Cards. That's not to say that a Flush with High Cards isn't worth more than a Flush without High Cards. It's just that it doesn't change its ... (read more)

Video Poker for the Impatient

19 January 2005
Video Poker really isn't a game for the impatient. Even the simplest version takes time to master to play it properly. There is, however, one version of the game that combines a much smaller and simpler strategy table with the higher volatility that the impatient may appreciate. Higher volatility is a nice way of saying that you'll either win big or go bust faster. ... (read more)

The Value of Slot Clubs

6 January 2005
Slot clubs are essentially the coupon system of Casinos. You provide the casino with your name and address, and the casino provides you with marketing offers, cashbacks and comps. Is this tradeoff worth it, and if yes, exactly how much is it worth? If you're someone who refuses to give anyone your name and address, then I suppose the answer is 'no'. ... (read more)

Let It Ride Primer

13 December 2004
Let It Ride is essentially the grand-daddy of the new generation of table games. For many years, it was the most popular of the new games, until Three Card Poker overtook it a few years ago. I believe it still holds the number two spot in terms of the number of tables in U.S. casinos. To the beginner, Let It Ride can appear to be intimidating. ... (read more)

Focus is Important

22 November 2004
One of the most common hands in Video Poker is the Pair. More than 40% of all pre-draw hands will be a Pair (High or Low). Have you ever sat there getting a sense you're not getting your fair share of Trips from a Pair? Exactly, how many is a fair share? On average, a Pair will become Trips a little more than 11% of the time or 1 in 9 times. ... (read more)

Naysayers unwittingly become 'Yeah'sayers

11 November 2004
Some people refuse to accept all the proof in the world. The concept of Expert Strategy has been proven repeatedly for the past 15 years. There are numerous writers and mathematicians who can attest to this. They may not call it 'expert strategy' but the concept is the same. You can throw in the concept of 'penalty' cards and we're still really talking about the same thing. ... (read more)
