Multiline Mathematics

6 April 2003
One phenomenon to hit casino games during the past ten years or so is that of the multiline.  One of the first was Three Hand Blackjack and then came Multiline Video Poker.  For all I know, there are some multiline games out there that I have yet to see.  It is ... (read more)

Mailbag

3 March 2003
Every now and then I receive questions from readers about the mathematics of gambling or just a question about some specific aspect of a gambling game.  This month I want to devote my column to answering questions from two of my readers: Maxine Nelson from Tampa, ... (read more)

City Picks, Euler, and the Ditsy Coat Check Girl

2 February 2003
One of the interesting things about doing gaming analysis is that every now and then I discover a clever piece of mathematics that is just the thing I need to complete a job.  Unfortunately, I don't always discover the mathematics I need.  A year or so ago I was asked to ... (read more)

Sharpshooter

5 January 2003
This past September I had the pleasure of attending the Global Gaming Expo, or G2E as it is known, that was held in Las Vegas. The convention was fascinating, as usual, with all of the new games, gaming machines, and gambling-related products on display. This year, for me, ... (read more)

All Deck Orderings - How Long Does It Take?

4 November 2002
I have a friend named Michael C. who is a Blackjack dealer at the Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas.  Mickey, as I call him, has been dealing cards for about six years so he has shuffled thousands and thousands of decks.  In all of that time do you suppose Mickey has put ... (read more)

Where Are Those Straight Flushes?

6 October 2002
I have a friend who is an avid 9/6 Jacks player. She knows how to play the game and I recently purchased Bob Dancer Presents WinPoker for her so that she could practice. In one of our conversations she remarked to me that she expected to see more Straight Flushes than actually occur and wanted my take on this. ... (read more)

Dealing Out Advice

1 September 2002
My favorite casino game is Blackjack. You might think that it is my favorite because I can count cards and win lots of money. Not so. I seldom count cards; most of the time I just play Basic strategy. Oh sure, I watch the cards and if a lot of little cards go by I bump up my bet and may not hit that 16 versus the dealer's 10 or that 12 versus the dealer's 3. ... (read more)

Thank you, Barney Vinson

2 August 2002
Every gaming writer has been confronted with the following problem at one time or another.  A friend, a friend of a friend, a secretary at work, a relative, a friend of a relative, or a neighbor is about to embark on a Las Vegas vacation.  "You know about this gambling stuff," they will say, ... Non-Random Randomness - Part 2: Innocent Until Proven Guilty

11 July 2002
Last month we established the generally accepted form of a random number generator (RNG).  It is a recursive function defined by a pair of equations as follows:                           (R1)    a0 = seed                           (R2)    an+1 = f (an) We noted that it is essential that the number ... Non-Random Randomness - Part 1

1 June 2002
With a title like the above oxymoron you may be thinking that "Catlin has finally lost his marbles."  Well, many of my friends and colleagues would probably agree that there is ample evidence to support such a conclusion; however, the present articles are not part of it.  Let me explain.     If we ...
