Lottery Nonsense

3 January 2004
As some of you may be aware, my book The Lottery Book: The Truth Behind the Numbers has finally been released and is now available from the publisher, Bonus Books, as well as from Huntington Press, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Wal-Mart, and other booksellers. I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank ... (read more)

Rhythmic Rolling and the Gambler's Jamboree

13 December 2003
This is the last of my four-part series on craps and deals with some mathematical issues related to the subject of rhythmic rolling. This is a term that refers to controlled shooting, specifically, setting and delivering the dice in a manner that increases the frequency of a seven occurring on the comeout roll and reduces the frequency of a seven occurring the rest of the time. ... Laying the Odds

2 November 2003
In my last two articles I looked at the Pass Line in the game of Craps and the effect of taking single odds. This month I want to look at the Don't Pass Line and the effect of what is called laying the odds. To begin with, let's see what is involved in the Don't Pass Line; we'll worry about odds later. ... Taking Odds in Craps

4 October 2003
Last month we analyzed the Pass Line in the game of Casino Craps. We discovered that the house edge for this bet is 1.414141…% and you saw, and I hope understood, how this wager was calculated. This month and next I want to consider a wager that is not shown on the Craps layout but is nonetheless available to players. ... (read more)

The Pass Line

1 September 2003
I am sure that you are all familiar with the house advantages of the standard casino games: 5.28% for Roulette, 5.22% for Caribbean Stud, 2.85% for Let it Ride, 3.37% and 2.32% on the Ante/Play wager and the Pair Plus wager in Three Card Poker, and 1.41% for the Pass Line in Craps. These figures are regularly tossed around by gaming writers. ... (read more)

Blackjack Tournament Play: What's Luck Got to Do With It?

2 August 2003
This past June I was in Las Vegas visiting with customers of mine and was staying at the Las Vegas Hilton. Ever since the Las Vegas Convention Center got rid of all the convenient (and free) parking I have been staying at the Hilton because of its close proximity to the convention center. ... Oops!

16 July 2003
One of the nice things about mathematics is that when you're right about something there is no question about it; you can supply a proof of your assertion.  The flip side of that coin, however, is the fact that when you're wrong you're wrong and there is nothing you ... (read more)

Four Card Poker Paradox

5 July 2003
I'm sure you've all heard that old admonition "Be careful what you say, your words may come back to haunt you." Well, my words did come back to haunt me. Back in March of 2001 I wrote an article entitled Four Card Poker? I Don't Think So. In that article ... (read more)

Million Dollar Video Poker

7 June 2003
The first Global Gaming Exposition, or G2E as it is called, was held in late September 2001, a few days after the dastardly attacks in New York and Washington. The keynote speaker was Whoopie Goldberg. I imagine that other attendees, like myself, were curious as to how ... (read more)

Mensa Mystery

4 May 2003
One of this site's readers, Ray Foley, recently wrote to Frank Scoblete with a question about a combination bet at craps.  Frank forwarded Ray's letter to me.  I wrote to Ray and asked him if I could quote his letter in my article and he said that would be fine. ... (read more)
