Top 10 sporting events to bet on in May

2 May 2016

There are two months in the year when sportsbooks around the world go berserk: May and October.

The latter features the MLB postseason and World Series, as well as a full slate of NFL games every week. The NBA and NHL seasons also get underway in October, and golf's Ryder Cup usually runs in the first weekend of the month.

May is pretty damn great as well. And though the following list doesn't even include the month of regular season baseball games played every single day, here are the top 10 sporting events you can bet on in the month of May.

10. Barclays Premier League final match day

With 10 matches on the slate on May 15, the final day of the Premier League promises to be an exciting one for soccer fans. Be sure to check out bet365 Sportsbook & Racebook for a range of offers for that week's action, including the site's 100% accumulator bonus and bore draw money back guarantee.

9. The Players Championship

The golf tournament known affectionately as the PGA's "fifth major" plays every year at TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. This week's event will run from May 12-15, as 2015 champion Rickie Fowler will look to defend his title. Check out Paddy Power Sportsbook in the days leading up to the tournament to get the most up-to-date betting odds.

8. UFC 198

Sportsbooks like the SuperBook at Westgate Las Vegas will be hopping this month with so many big events to bet on.

Current UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabrício Werdum will square off against Stipe Miocic to headline UFC 198 on Saturday, May 14, live from Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil. The full card features 13 matches for the evening. Werdum is currently listed as the favorite at -165 odds on Bovada Sportsbook, and you can bet on Miocic at +135.

7. Deontay Wilder vs. Alexander Povetkin

Deontay Wilder will look to defend his WBC heavyweight title on May 21 in Megasport Arena in Moscow against Alexander Povetkin, who has won four consecutive matches. Wilder is currently a -140 favorite on Bovada Sportsbook, and you can bet on Povetkin at +110.

6. Preakness Stakes

The Preakness doesn't carry the same weight as the Kentucky Derby, but the second of the three Triple Crown races will determine whether or not horse racing will have its second straight Triple Crown winner. This year's Preakness takes place on May 21, and is always at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

5. NHL Playoffs

As of Monday, May 2, the NHL postseason is currently slashing its way through the conference semifinals. The Stanley Cup Finals won't start until early June, but you can always make a futures bet on who you think will take home the Cup at bet365 Sportsbook & Racebook. The Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks are currently the co-favorites to win outright, both listed at +400.

4. NBA Playoffs

With the conclusion of two Game 7s on Sunday, the NBA postseason has officially reached the second round. In the East, LeBron James' Cleveland Cavaliers are in prime position to reach their second straight NBA Finals, while in the West, the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors are shaping up to play in what could be the greatest conference finals series of all time. The Warriors are currently favored to win the NBA title at Bovada Sportsbook, listed at +110.

3. UEFA Champions League Final

Atlético Madrid got off to a great start in its bid to reach the Champions League Final with a 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in Game 1 of their Semi-final series. The winner of that series will square off against the winner of Man. City vs. Real Madrid, which played to a scoreless draw in their first match. The Champions League Final takes place on May 28, and be sure to check in to bet365 Sportsbook & Racebook in the days leading up to the match.

2. Indianapolis 500

The 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place on Sunday, May 29 and should prove to be a spectacle. Be sure to check out Bovada Sportsbook for odds in the days and weeks leading up to the event, as 2015 champion Juan Pablo Montoya looks to win his third Indy 500 title.

1. Kentucky Derby

Will we see another Triple Crown winner in 2016, or was American Pharoah's run in 2015 an anomaly? The journey begins this Saturday, May 7, at Churchill Downs. Nyquist is the favorite to win right now at 8-to-1. You can bet live at your local racebook, or you can check out apps and sites like DerbyJackpot and TwinSpires to make a bet from the comfort of your home on the day of the race (available to residents of most U.S. states).
