Poker Player Tweets of the Week: How to view your losses

Nothing puts a damper on the holiday season more than a "Friday the 13th." Today's the day. I'm not a superstitious guy, but of course many people in the gambling world are. So today is a bit of a holiday itself, depending on which way you look at it. But let's ignore the hoax that is Friday the 13th and instead focus on the ramblings of poker players over the past few days. And for what it's worth, this will be my final "Poker Player Tweets of the Week" column of 2013. I set sail (in my 2005 Honda Accord) for the great state of Illinois next Thursday in my annual 2,400-mile trip around the Midwest. Happy holidays to all my loyal readers out there. This is an interesting debate. On the one hand, failure is difficult to overcome no matter what, and can be even more devastating when you know there's nothing you can do to control it. On the other hand, a successful poker player cannot be results-oriented. In a game like poker, where huge swings in luck, bankroll size and opportunity are to be expected, only the mentally toughest players will come out alive and prosperous at the end of a large sample size. Successful players are those who embrace variance, knowing that they will overcome their poor results but their opponents might not. I agree with Farber here, though I will toss in one caveat: When you see poor results because of your own mistakes, you know that there is still room for improvement. And when you have the ability to pinpoint your mistakes and work to eliminate them, you ultimately get stronger because of it. Friday, Dec. 13: Barry "@barrygreenstein" Greenstein

That's a pretty sick hand for Open Face. But unless I'm missing something, it looks like Greenstein's opponent to the left nailed a trip to Fantasyland with his pair of Kings up top! Of course, there's always the chance Greenstein's opponent mis-set, and his bottom hand does not beat the pair of Aces shown in the middle. The Pats are drawing dead to win the Superbowl but at the same time, with a win this weekend, will be the #1 seed with 2 games to play.

The NFL is amazing. Thanks to the Denver Broncos' 27-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Thursday night, the Rob Gronkowski-less New England Patriots are now just a half-game from taking hold of the No. 1 seed in the AFC. At the same time, if the Patriots lose their game Sunday to the Miami Dolphins (not at all an unlikely scenario, given the lack of Gronkowski), the Pats run the risk of falling out of a first-round bye and into the No. 3 seed if the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. I disagree that the Pats are "drawing dead" to win the Super Bowl -- never doubt Bill Belichick and Tom Brady -- but New England's range of postseason scenarios is wild. This all depends on the financial arrangement with the maid. If you are paying the maid by the hour, then it would make sense to do some of the work yourself so the maid's total time spent working is less. But yes, if you are paying the maid a flat fee, by all means, continue to be a total slob.
