Casino City's Friday Five: Gambling in Pennsylvania edition

15 September 2017

What was on the menu this week? The usual: Online poker's meteoric success, tools to help with problem gambling, and a giant art installation.

Never a dull moment in the gaming world.

1. NJ online casinos surpass $20 million in revenue for sixth consecutive month
New Jersey's online casinos have raked in over $20 million in revenue for the sixth consecutive month as of August, the highest since March and up 32% compared to the same time last year.

In total, the state has generated $640 million in gross revenue since November 2013, when the whole business was legalized and regulated.

So it's safe to say that New Jersey's doing really, really well.

2. Mr Green launches predictive gaming tool
Essentially, this helpful tool gives you the power to monitor your gameplay and help you decide whether you're going overboard. It does this by analyzing your play and comparing it against your own assessment of your actions. From there, it allows Mr Green Casino to adjust its offerings accordingly.

For now, only the U.K. market will have access to this tool, but Mr Green has plans for it to roll out in other markets in the fall.

3. The Plaza Hotel begins adding 21-story mural
Faile, a Brooklyn-based artistic duo consisting of Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller, will decorate the north tower of the Plaza Hotel and Casino with a 21-story mural that will be seen by approximately 200,000 people every day.

This will be the third mural on the tower and is a step toward curating one of the largest outdoor art galleries in downtown Las Vegas.

4. Mecca Bingo, Rank Group break record for largest game of office bingo
Two hundred and thirty-five Mecca Bingo team members gathered to break the record on 12 September. The previous record-holders, 97 TaskUs employees who set the record in 2012, have officially been dethroned.

This makes us realize we've really been skimping on our office bingo games.

5. Pennsylvania moves ever closer to online gambling . . . maybe
With the passage of a bill on Wednesday to fund the state budget, online gambling may be back on the table in Pennsylvania.

H 453 contains provision for online gambling that have been called "vague and puzzling." But it's a good thing they're in there at all, right? We're finally on the road to Pennsylvania getting legalized online gambling, right?

. . . Right?

Online gambling, online lotteries and daily fantasy sports have been shuttled on and off these bills over the past few months, so we'll have to see what the Senate thinks.
