Dear Frank,

I recently purchased Walter Thomason's book Twenty-first Century Blackjack. Can you recommend a Blackjack software product that can be used to test/practice his progression system? The programs that I've located are very limited regarding doubling down after splitting, choice of multi-deck games, and other real casino betting options.

Thanks,
Larry

Dear Larry:

I forwarded your question to Walter Thomason. Here is his reply:

Dear Larry,

Unfortunately, the industry has not yet caught up with the concept of testing progressive betting systems, in spite of my book and its implications. Prior to writing the book, I attempted to find programs on the market that would not only test my Positive Progressive system, but would also allow me to compare my methods to flat bettors and card counters who were dealt the same hands by the same dealer. No luck. One program designer even told me that "it doesn't matter, because progressions can't possibly work."

By chance, I received an inquiry from a computer systems engineer -- and avid blackjack player -- who had interests similar to mine. He developed several programs that allowed me to test my theories, and I continue to use them when I want to run long-term simulations. Unfortunately, he had to "reprogram" my computer to read the data, and my efforts to make these programs commercially available have not yet occurred due to the lack of free time on both his part and mine. My hope is that those familiar with designing blackjack programs will set aside their predisposed biases and design a program that can be made available to the general public.

If you wish to use manually-recorded data to test my plan (or yours) there's a new book out in May that illustrates the win/loss record of over 50,000 manually dealt hands. It's called "Blackjack Tracker." For more information, e-mail Mr. Bob Hubby at bhubby@earthlink.net.

If and when a computer program becomes commercially available, we'll let you know on this site.

Good luck at the tables!
Walter Thomason
