Top 10 players to watch in the 2024 WSOP Main Event1 July 2024
The most exciting live tournament of the year will attract thousands of players from all over the world – amateurs and pros alike – all of them looking to capture the big money and the prestige that comes with being the world poker champion. Last year, poker pro Daniel Weinman took home the Main Event bracelet and the $12.1 million first-place prize, the largest payout in history after beating out field 10,043 players, which also broke the record for the biggest field. With the Main Event being such a massive tournament, it’s hard to predict who will go deep, and every year, there are a few surprises in the mix. That said, below is the list of the top 10 players to watch out for in the 55th edition of the WSOP Main Event, consisting of some well-known names and some up-and-comers who could surprise and make some noise. We expect to see at least a few of these players will make a solid run at the title. 10. Daniel Negreanu When it comes to players to watch at the World Series of Poker, it’s impossible not to mention Daniel Negreanu. Kid Poker has had a bit of a slow start to the summer, but it seems things are turning around for him, as he’s just won the prestigious Poker Players Championship for his seventh-career bracelet. Negreanu has everything required to make a deep run in the Main Event. His tremendous experience, deep understanding of the game, poker odds, and remarkable ability to read his opponents, especially amateurs, are all working for him.
9. Maria Ho If there is one player without a bracelet who certainly deserves one, that’s Maria Ho. Despite impressive results in tournaments and cash games alike, that particular piece of jewelry has yet to find its way to Maria’s wrist. ![]() Maria Ho Although a woman has never won the Main Event, Ho is the only three-time Last Woman Standing at the event (2007, 2014, and 2020). 8. Phil Ivey It’s been a while since we’ve had the pleasure of watching Phil Ivey put in a real grind at the World Series of Poker, but he’s been at it in 2024. This has already resulted in one bracelet, and the poker legend isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. The Main Event may not be Ivey’s usual playground, but when he’s motivated (which he seems to be this year), he can certainly go far and even to the title. Of course, regardless of his skills, he’ll need some help from poker gods along the way. Ivey’s best run in the Main Event came in 2009 when he made it to the final table and finished seventh, before subsequently snubbing the media. 7. Santhosh Suvarna Santhosh Suvarna became known to the wider poker audience from his appearances in high-stakes cash games, and he has an image of a hyper-aggressive and reckless player. However, it seems Santhosh approaches tournaments quite a bit differently. Just last week, he managed to outlast an impressive field in the $250,000 WSOP Super High Roller event, winning his second career bracelet. He may not be a shark, but he’s the kind of player who can run up a massive stack in a tournament like the Main Event and make life very difficult for his opponents. 6. Viktor Blom Ladies and gentlemen, Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom is back with a vengeance! The Swedish phenom, who once shook the very foundations of the high-stakes online poker community, has been very busy at the 2024 WSOP, and he’s already had three final table finishes this summer. It seems that Blom’s passion for poker has been rekindled in full once more, and a player of his caliber is never more dangerous than when his desire for winning is at its peak. It’ll be very interesting to see what ‘Isildur1’ can do in the Main Event, especially if he picks up some momentum early on. He also approaches push fold game very aggressively, so he will be a tough opponent for anyone. 5. Kristen Foxen There are very few female players, or poker players in general, who have achieved what Kristen Foxen has achieved throughout her career. With four bracelets to her name and over $7.6 million in winnings, Foxen has made it clear she belongs with the poker elite. She’s had a fair few cashes this year at the World Series, but she’s yet to make a final table. Perhaps she’s been saving her good run for the Main Event, and things will finally fall into place in the big one. Of course, if she does make a deep run this year, you can expect her husband, Alex Foxen, to be on the rail since he is also a poker pro and ranks 21st on the all-time poker money list with over $32.5 million in winnings. 4. Shaun Deeb There are very few players who enjoy the World Series of Poker as much as Shaun Deeb. Year after year, he’s been putting on the grind, and he never seems to get tired of it. In addition to his enormous experience, Shaun also has a particular set of skills that could come in very handy in a tournament like the Main Event. In many ways, he’s “old school,” often playing the player and not the cards, and that ability can be very useful at the WSOP’s biggest stage. 3. Scott Seiver Scott Seiver seems determined to show the world that his tournament skills are on par with his cash game abilities, and so far, he’s been doing a great job of it. This summer, Scott has already secured three bracelets, and making it four with a Main Event victory would pretty much cement his spot in the Poker Hall of Fame, since he already ranks 30th on the all-time money list with more than $26.3 million in earnings. Of course, it takes much more than determination to win a tournament like this, but 2024 seems to be the year of Seiver.
2. Jeremy Becker Jeremy Becker isn’t a famous poker player. His name only became known to the wider poker public thanks to Negreanu’s cross-book, but this young shark most certainly knows poker strategy and has the drive required to make a deep run in a huge field. Becker is a true grinder, and poker tournaments are his bread and butter. For him, playing the Main Event will be just another day at the office, and you can be certain he’ll be playing for the win from the word go. This can easily backfire, but it can also lead to an epic story that’ll be told for years to come. 1. Justin Saliba Although high roller tournaments are more of his natural habitat, Justin Saliba is the kind of player who loves the game and good challenge, and what bigger challenge is there than the Main Event? Justin is, without a doubt, one of the best players in the game today, and he’ll be a big favorite in a tournament that attracts many amateurs and recreational players. He has the skills and the drive, so with some help from Lady Luck, no one would be surprised to see him at the final table.
