Heard It On The River

3 January 2006
Here we are at the beginning of 2006 and let's hope it will bring more blessings than bashings like disaster-laden 2005. Last year concluded with a very busy holiday season at Mississippi's casino and being an eternal optimist, I look for a better year for the industry in general. As we have found out ... Heard It On The River

16 December 2005
Is our glass half full or half empty? At this time of the year I prefer to fill my glass with optimism and why not? Casinos are re-opening on the Gulf Coast, the Iraqis have finally voted for a new government which hopefully means that our boys and gals will be coming home, Avian flu seems to have flown ... Grand Casino Guarantees $60k First Prize in $150k Tournament

18 November 2005
It took me several blackjack tournaments to benefit from my egregious mistakes to realize that what I learned playing regular blackjack was not the way to go in tournaments. Little things that you never pay attention to, like making string bets in regular play is not allowed in tournament play. Once you put out your bet, you cannot cap it or pull it back. ... Heard It On The River

28 September 2005
As we met our deadline for this column the Mississippi Legislature had not yet met in special session to consider, among other things, a change in the 1990 Gaming Control law to permit casinos to build on land rather than over water. That is obviously the right thing to do when you consider the damage to buildings, lives and jobs that were blown away with HURRICANE KATRINA. ... (read more)

Heard It On The River

13 September 2005
While a lot of us are sitting here feeling good about our support and contributions to the thousands of unfortunate victims (not refugees) of Killer Katrina, there is more to be done, much more. And for those of you who have sat on your wallets, your assistance is still needed. How could you not open up and ... (read more)

Heard It On The River

26 August 2005
It was a four day marathon and then some and being a bar owner didn't exactly put GREG BERKOW in top shape for a grueling final table session that didn't end until 2:30 a.m. at GRAND. The stocky Berkow, garbed in a sport shirt and hat, outlasted 178 players in the $10,000 buy-in for the HARRAH'S WORLD SERIES ... (read more)

Jack Binion Legacy Home at Horseshoe

23 August 2005
When Harrah's acquired the Horseshoe brand it also took on the legacy of its famed owner, Jack Binion. There was much speculation among players and employees on how the largest casino company in the world would handle this transition. Not to worry, Harrah's is committed to preserving not only the Binion ... (read more)

Heard it on the River

17 August 2005
The private reception for the exceptional show, BALAGAN, was a great coming out party in Tunica for GOLDSTRIKE under its new management but how do you follow up that wonderful soiree with impact? How about putting in what folks hereabouts like the most, more slots. Like $7 million worth of them. ... (read more)

Heard it on the River

1 August 2005
Tunica's casinos do not have to take a back seat in entertainment to any gaming jurisdiction and this was proven with the recent debut of the much-awaited production show, BALAGAN. This column rarely reviews shows after the fact, preferring to publicize them before to help spur attendance, but this ... (read more)
