Youth 'Need Warning on Dangers of Gambling'

VANCOUVER, Canada -- As reported by the Vancouver Province: ``Young people are twice as likely to be problem gamblers as the average B.C. resident -- and that's not good, says Surrey Coun. Penny Priddy.

```As gambling increases, so does the number of problem gamblers among youth,' she said yesterday. 'Most parents watch for alcohol or drug use, but it doesn't occur to them to check up on gambling.'

``…The B.C. Problem Gambling Prevalence Study shows 9.8 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 reported problem gaming. The average for the population as a whole was 4.6.

``The study backs the findings of an earlier study on youth gambling.

``That study by McGill University in Montreal released in October found that young adults between 18 and 24 were two to four times more likely to develop a gambling problem than the general adult population.

``…Gambling advocates say there is plenty of help for those who want it, including a toll-free help line at 1-888-795-6111…"
