Wyoming tribal gaming set to grow

WIND RIVER INDIAN RESERVATION, Wyoming -- As reported by the Jackson Hole Star Tribune: "As the number of casinos on the Wind River Indian Reservation grows, there are questions about how many the area can support.

"But consultants for the Northern Arapaho Tribe believe that more casinos could be better for business, instead of worse. With enough casinos, they predict, the reservation might even become a regional gaming destination.

"There may be reason to believe what they say.

"For one, the reservation is the only place in Wyoming where commercial, casino-style gambling is allowed by law. Horse racing, pari-mutuel betting, bingo, pull tabs and some forms of social gambling are also legal in the state.

"The reservation casinos offer gaming in the style of Las Vegas, including slot machines and blackjack -- games that are illegal in most of Wyoming's neighbor states.

"...One factor limiting major growth could be the area's small population, but there are ways to overcome the problem, said Mark Van Norman, executive director of the nonprofit National Indian Gaming Association in Washington, D.C..."
