Woodstock Mayor Dismisses Casino Plans

WOODSTOCK, Ontario – As reported by the London Free Press: "Local municipal officials haven't had direct contact with backers of what the city's mayor calls a "fantasy" casino plan for Woodstock.

"'I'm saying this is a media-driven house of cards,' Mayor Michael Harding said yesterday regarding the proposal from First Guardian Financial Corp., based in New York City. First Guardian's plan calls for it to be the majority partner in a joint venture development on 20 hectares.

"In addition to Southwestern Ontario newspaper coverage, the proposal has been posted on numerous websites, including Yahoo's online financial section and the Commercial Property News site.

"…'It's a piece of fantasy, in my opinion, from the United States,' Harding said.

"The plan flies in the face of current law in Ontario, with provincial gaming officials maintaining the casino would require legislative changes for it to go ahead…"
