Women powerhouses in Choctaw operation5 September 2007DURANT, Oklahoma -- As reported by Tulsa World: "In the world of Indian gaming, Choctaw citizens Janie Dillard and Tammye Gwin pack a one-two punch. "As the head of gaming for the Choctaw Nation, Dillard steers her tribe's gaming operations in a profession that is overwhelmingly male. Gwin serves as assistant director of gaming, the second managerial seat in the Choctaw gaming operation. "A gaming powerhouse, the Choctaw Nation has eight gaming sites and five travel plazas. "Both women scout for opportunities to improve the tribe's operations within its 12-county jurisdiction, Dillard said. "...Dillard and Gwin started their gaming careers in a humble way. "'I was a floor supervisor at our first bingo hall,' Dillard recalls. "...Gwin said she began selling gaming packs in a Choctaw bingo hall in 1990. "...Both Dillard's and Gwin's upward swing, like most positions in the gaming arena, was fluid. Time was spent in positions from cashier to money-room counter to the kitchen. "...Brian Foster, Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association chairman, said women do hold positions in gaming commissions among the state tribes, but there are no state numbers for women in top management..." |
