With No State Aid in the Cards, City Pushes Casino Plan17 May 2004CHICAGO -- As reported by the Chicago Sun Times: ``When Gov. Blagojevich said no dice to a Chicago casino, he promised to find another way to make the city ''whole.'' ``On Friday, state budget director John Filan failed to deliver on that promise, leaving City Hall more determined than ever to forge ahead with a casino vote over the governor's objections -- and to try to make it veto-proof. ``'A casino in Chicago would provide an ongoing, sustainable new source of revenues, primarily collected from . . . tourists and conventioneers. At this point, I see no need not to continue our efforts to make our case with the Legislature,' said Chicago budget director John Harris. ``Harris went into the meeting with Filan hoping for 'new sources of revenue -- creative sources'' to replace an estimated $300 million pot of gold from a Chicago casino. He came away from the meeting with ''no specific offers and no commitments.'…" |
