Wisconsin Tribe Wants New York Deal

NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Post Standard: "The Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin wants to strike its own land claim deal with the state, opening a casino in the Catskills instead of receiving the millions of dollars in damages New York could be forced to pay.

"Bill Gollnick, the tribe's general manager, said Thursday in Utica there could be a development in the tribe's settlement proposal 'in the next couple weeks,' but he declined to elaborate.

"…Gollnick and six other Wisconsin Oneida officials traveled to Utica this week, touring their homelands and meeting with local media. They leave today for Wisconsin, where the tribe runs a casino and other businesses.

"The state and the Oneida Indian Nation of New York oppose the Wisconsin settlement proposal.

"The three Oneida tribes of Wisconsin, New York and Ontario together filed the land claim lawsuit in the early 1970s. Wisconsin officials say they're ready to strike out on their own and settle the claim with New York.

"…The tribe wants to open one of three Indian-run casinos in the Catskills that the state Legislature approved in 2001…"
