Wisconsin Tribe Sets 2005 Deadline for Casino

DARLINGTON, Wisconsin – As reported by the (Monroe, Wisconsin) Times Plus: "If everything is not done for the Lac du Flambeau Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa Indians to proceed with its Shullsburg casino by 2005, it will be over, tribal spokesman Carl Edwards told the Lafayette County Economic Development Committee Tuesday.

"…For everything to be done, the tribe needs a signed gaming compact with the state and project approval from the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs approval. Edwards said the tribe is not going to update the information it provided the BIA in the fall and winter of 2000 and 2001 until it has a signed compact with the state. The BIA will not finish its review of the Lac du Flambeau trust application without updated information.

"The Lac du Flambeau is the only tribe in the state without a gaming compact, Edwards said. The tribe is still negotiating it with Gov. Jim Doyle.

"…One sticking point in the negotiations has been the tribe's commitment to the Shullsburg location, according to Edwards.

"…The other sticking point has been the cost for the tribe, he said. The governor has set a pretty high price tag, Edwards said…"
