Wisconsin Tribe Buys New York Land, Plans Casino

NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Times Herald-Record: "A casino in the Town of Mamakating?

"…[The] Wisconsin Oneidas confirmed yesterday they bought 84 acres off Old Route 17 between exits 112 and 113 with the intention of building a casino in the town bordering Orange County.

"The Oneidas are trying to settle a land claim with New York state. The tribe is attempting to broker a deal with the state for a casino compact in return for `damages,' said Kathy Hughes, vice chairman of the Wisconsin Oneidas.

"…The Wisconsin Oneidas need a compact with the governor's office and federal approval for a casino through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Gov. George Pataki has refused to negotiate compacts with out-of-state tribes.

"The Wisconsin Oneidas also bought 250 acres in Verona, near the Turning Stone Casino Resort owned by their rivals, The Oneida Nation of New York. New York Oneidas also have eyed property in Sullivan County, spokesman Mark Emery said…"
