Wisconsin Tribe Abides by Compact

WISCONSIN – As reported by the Green Bay News Chronicle: "Oneida tribal officials not only are going ahead with their gaming compact payments; they've invited Gov. Jim Doyle to town to pick up the $20 million check personally.

"Chairwoman Tina Danforth said Friday the Oneidas will continue to pay full amounts and act as if their compact with the state is still in full force despite a State Supreme Court decision that said Doyle overstepped his bounds in approving a similar compact.

"She said the tribe as a sovereign nation had a separate deal that was not directly affected by the court's decision, and that the court's decision was on a deal between two sovereigns, the state and the Potawatomi tribe.

"…The suit was filed by Assembly Speaker John Gard, R-Peshtigo, and Senate Majority Leader Mary Panzer, R-West Bend. Republicans said the Legislature should have had veto power over compact agreements, especially because of clauses allowing renewals permanently without new negotiations.

"…The Oneidas see no reason to go back to the table and re-negotiate to give up any aspects of their agreement, Danforth said…"
