Wisconsin Officials Upset Over Casino Question Wording

WISCONSIN – As reported by the Wisconsin State Journal: "In asking Dane County voters if they want a casino, County Board members want referendum language that some Madison officials say is biased in favor of gambling.

"`This could set the stage for poor relations between the city and the county,' City Council President Mike Verveer said.

"…If approved, the question would read, "Should the Ho-Chunk Nation's DeJope Facility in the City of Madison, Dane County, be allowed to offer the same casino-style games allowed at other Indian gaming facilities in Wisconsin, if a portion of the revenues is used to support city and county services?"

"The wording is not the language the City Council and Mayor Dave Cieslewicz asked the County Board to approve. But the County Board has the final say.

"`That wording is outrageously biased and one-sided,' Verveer said.

"Cieslewicz sent a memo to County Board members, saying the county's language is biased in favor of a `yes' vote…"
