Wisconsin Governor's Casino Plans Draw Criticism23 January 2004WISCONSIN – As reported by the Wisconsin Channel 3000: "In Lafayette County, many are frustrated, angry and disappointed with Gov. Jim Doyle. They fear he may be trumping their chances for building a casino by giving Dane County first crack at Las Vegas-style gambling. "…More than three years ago, the Lac Du Flambeau Band of Superior Chippewa pursued its deal with the state to anchor an off-tribal-land casino, and it picked Shullsburg. "In a community where the city's budget is $915,000 per year, the tribe has promised annual payments of $1 million, with another $3 million going into county coffers. "…All that's needed now is Doyle's approval, which the county's leaders say was promised 10 months ago. "…Doyle says there's not much he can do to help right now. He says the federal government hasn't approved the casino site…" |
