Wisconsin Governor to Veto Gaming Bill

WISCONSIN – As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "Gov. Jim Doyle said Thursday that he could veto as early as Friday legislation that would give lawmakers a formal role in negotiating gaming compacts with Wisconsin's Indian tribes.

"The Assembly and the Senate passed the bill Wednesday.

"'I'll veto it as soon as I get back to my office. I'm not back until tomorrow,' said Doyle, who was in Mequon on Thursday to announce four state Department of Natural Resources Stewardship Fund grants.

"…The governor has, however, extended a hand to Republican lawmakers, who want a role in crafting the gaming compacts.

"Department of Administration Secretary Marc Marotta said Thursday that he had consulted with Assembly Speaker John Gard (R-Peshtigo) and Senate Majority Leader Mary Panzer (R-West Bend). The two had filed the lawsuit that resulted in the state Supreme Court ruling last week that Doyle had exceeded his authority in agreeing to a pact with the Forest County Potawatomi.

"…Although the Supreme Court ruled that only the compact with the Potawatomi was invalid, the ruling is expected to extend to all of the pacts…"
