Wisconsin Governor to Side with Voters on Casino Plan22 December 2003MADISON, Wisconsin – As reported by the Associated Press: "Gov. Jim Doyle says that although he and the federal government have the right to authorize casino gambling regardless of public opinion, he will respect the wishes of Dane County voters on whether the Ho-Chunk Nation can expand a bingo hall into a casino. "The Dane County Board last month scheduled a referendum for Feb. 17 on expansion of the tribe's Madison bingo hall under which the tribe would pay the county and the city of Madison at least $90 million during the next dozen years. "…Doyle, who is a Dane County resident, declined to say how he intends to vote on the referendum. People can decide without his influence, he said…" |
