Wisconsin Casino May Go to Vote

WISCONSIN – As reported by the Wisconsin State Journal: "`(The agreement) does not change my mind,' Cieslewicz said. `I oppose casino gambling. Personally, I will vote no. But my job as mayor is to represent and protect taxpayers. People are going to vote their own conscience.'

"Cieslewicz said he's confident the agreement protects Madison taxpayers from paying for additional services - police and fire protection and roads - required by a casino if the referendum is successful. The Madison City Council is expected to approve a resolution Tuesday asking Dane County to hold a referendum asking voters if they want a casino at DeJope.

"…The option for more casino games at DeJope, which opened in 1999, comes after Gov. Jim Doyle signed compacts in April with seven tribes, allowing for more casino games in exchange for more money to the state.

"…If no referendum is scheduled by Dec. 1, Doyle could authorize the expanded gambling anyway…"
