Wisconsin Casino Dispute Simmers

DARLINGTON, Wisconsin – As reported by the (Wisconsin) Times Plus: "Madison attorney Mark Hazelbaker is standing by comments George Williams made to Lac du Flambeau Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa Indians spokesman Carl Edwards, saying the Lafayette County board chairman said or did nothing inappropriate.

"But others involved in negotiations for a proposed Lac du Flambeau casino in Shullsburg take issue with comments Williams made Monday regarding Edwards' complaint of how Williams had spoken to him. Lafayette County board members Mike Byrne and Jack Alexander and Milwaukee attorney Andy Phillips Tuesday disputed statements Williams made at Monday's economic development committee meeting concerning the timing of Edwards' complaints and the county's 2000 contract with the tribe supporting a Shullsburg casino.

"Hazelbaker said Tuesday nothing inappropriate was said in the Feb. 24 conversation between Williams and Edwards.

"…Williams did express his displeasure at being excluded from meetings with Gov. Jim Doyle about a multi-million dollar project in the county, Hazelbaker said.

"…On Tuesday, Edwards said the communication problem lies with Williams.

"'Williams has a communications problem down there in Lafayette County,' he said. 'We were invited to come. We came. He said he was not told until that day that we were going to be there. That is not our problem. It is not the tribe's responsibility to ensure county committees communicate with their county board chairman in a timely manner.'…"
