Wisconsin bill threatens casino's approval4 April 2007WISCONSIN – AS reported by the Beloit Daily News: "Assembly Bill 205 is being heard in Madison today by the Committee on Urban and Local Affairs, and representatives from the St. Croix and Bad River bands of the Chippewa and local officials will be front and center voicing their opposition to the proposed legislation. "If passed into law, the bill would change the state approval process for off-reservation casinos, requiring the approval of the entire Wisconsin Legislature as opposed to exclusively the governor. "…Rep. Robin Vos, R-Racine, began circulating the bill along with five other co-sponsors about a month ago, seeking additional support. It has now been officially introduced by a total of 31 proponents in the Assembly and three in the Senate. "…But supporters of the Beloit Casino say that input has already been collected - through the 61 percent of voters who favored the casino in a 2000 referendum, as well as public hearings of the project's Environmental Impact Study. "…For now, the Beloit Casino application remains in the office of Bureau of Indian Affairs Indian Gaming Director George Skibine, where it has been undergoing a staff review since January…" |
