Wichita chamber to oppose casino

WICHITA -- As reported by the Wichita Eagle: "The Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce said Wednesday that it will oppose next month's vote on casino gambling in Sedgwick County, despite a survey of its members that showed more support for remaining neutral or supporting the issue.

"The decision came Wednesday afternoon following a meeting of the chamber's 44-member board of directors.

"Chamber officials said 60 percent of directors voted for the chamber to oppose a referendum next month on gambling in the county.

"Voters will decide Aug. 7 whether to have a casino in the county and whether Wichita Greyhound Park can have slot machines.

"In a survey of its members earlier this month -- in which 31 percent of 1,773 members responded -- more than a third said the chamber should be neutral on the casino issue, while another third said it should support a casino.

"...But chamber officials said the group's decision was based on a number of factors, not just the survey..."
