West Warwick Rushes to Complete Studies22 June 2006WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Town officials are rushing to complete studies related to the proposed casino project before the November referendum, years after Harrah's Entertainment first proposed building a casino resort in the town's industrial park. "The Las Vegas company has completed detailed engineering reports on the project, studying the potential impacts on the environment, local roads and utilities. "But town officials have called that work inadequate, promising to independently research traffic concerns and predict the increase in demand for municipal services. But as casino-enabling legislation floundered over the past two years, payments from Harrah's for such work dried up and local studies halted. "…Opponents of the casino, including council member Leo J. Costantino Jr., have questioned why the studies have been repeatedly delayed. Yesterday, Frank Lombardo, president of West Warwick Citizens Against the Casino, dismissed the sudden spurt of activity as too late to educate voters…" |
